Magic Caustic Video

Another go with Magic Visuals and Caustic working together (well, almost, I had to export the midifile and add some midi CCs)

This one did put my old laptop on his knees, can't play with it in realtime with my Korg  keyboard on this old Toshiba. But just after finishing the video export, I had the chance to put my hands on a 3 months old second hand Asus ROG laptop. This one is really a killer, and now I can play this whole scene live from 5 midi sources = 5 musicians, each one having his visual sonic identity moving on the screen.

Better in full HD. Unfortunately, the sound did suffer a lot during YT conversion. Lots of artifacts on the white noise sweeps and mangled hi frequencies :(

That's quite good,

That's quite good, graphically it feels a bit dated, but the principal is great

Rob, to be fair, this is real

Rob, to be fair, this is real time 3 rendering so it doesn't have global illumination and looks like strong antialiasing would seriously affect performance.

The only thing that could come close to what you might "think" is good graphics would be from a C++ game engine like Unreal engine or Unity.

As well, most of these things are for projections, so massive quality is a waste of resources for the majority of output.

I know it's real time, and

I know it's real time, and yes, I've coded with unity so I'm aware of what can be achieved... I'm not taking anything away from this regardless of what you might "think" I "think".

Thanks for your comments.

Thanks for your comments. Graphically, I agree, it's old fashioned, but I'm not good in graphic and design. I would love to collaborate with a graphic artist and 3D modeler. (I've build all the models in a very crappy modeler from Corel. I have Blender, but it's so crippled for me...)

Magic is not intended to be a game engine, it only support basic 3D models import with some restrictions, no lights, no shadows. I've made an attempt some years ago with a game engine, 3D RAD, and asked the dev to implement midi controls. But he leaved the project soon after, so the midi functionnality are very limited, and the engine is now abandonned.

I can't really found a piece of software that is capable to do what I expect from it: real time 3D vizualisation controlled by sound and midi, so I have to struggle with what I've found. Instead of "circuit bending", I'm making "software bending" ;-)

By the way, Rob, do you know if Unity has some kind of interaction with music?

Thaks edgey! Did'nt know for

Thaks edgey! Did'nt know for the Unity midi plugin. I requires a pro account (125$ a month) for midi and video...

I should start with the free version and try to learn Unity first. ( right now I'm watching the tutorials)

Soundstage VR is an amazing virtual studio for HTC vive, but this is out of my scope for now.

@skarabee I have used Unity

@skarabee I have used Unity since version 3 and while native plugins required the pro version in previous versions, Unity 5 has allowed no restrictions on the use of native C/C++ plugins.

Where did you get that information about needing pro? I think if it's older info, they haven't updated it based on the new license model.

BTW, I actually created a

BTW, I actually created a ToneCube type tone matrix player with the Caustic core audio in Unity last year that used C++ and I don't have the pro version.

Thaks Edgey for the links!

Thaks Edgey for the links! Have to find some spare time to dive into Unity, hope my brain can handle the learning curve...;-)
