Hypersolarian

Hello again. I have a considerable queue of music to release, so I'm gonna be quite annoying on this forum (although maybe not enough to win the most annoying award...) in the coming weeks. I hope you'll bear with me.

Today's track is not particularly interesting in itself, bread & butter drum & bass, with some tentative redeeming qualities. But, it does have a bit of backstory.

The filename for it in my Caustic folder is 3x303, and my idea was: What if I set up 3 basslines, with similar but different settings, controlled by a single modular, and automate the controls of each one independently? That should be three times more acid than a 303!

And boy, was I wrong :-)

The result doesn't actually sound at all bad, but it's more akin to a lush, silky, expensive 3-oscillators synth, with a somewhat 'funkier than thou' attitude, than a glorious acid machine. So, as often happens, I just went with the flow and let the track evolve into something different than what I had in mind.

I guess this teaches us a valuable lesson: adding more of something doesn't always work, quite the opposite. You risk losing, or watering down, the character that you wanted to enhance.

Alright, that's really enough of me blabbering for today. As usual, enjoy the music.

cheers,
Aldo

That's interesting... a google search for Hypersolarian returns zero results. There a story behind the name? Anyway, I had a listen and bopped my head. Thanks for sharing :)

Hey, thank you! I hope the head bopping wasn't painful :-)

No big story behind the name. It's mostly just a word play on hyperuranion (beyond the heavens), which is a concept in Plato's philosophy: everything we experience is merely a copy of perfect ideas residing in the hyperuranion. Solarian, in sci-fi lingo, means something like inhabitant of the sun, or related to the sun. So the meaning would be something like beyond the sun, which in turn made me think of a verse in a Pearl Jam's song (I wish I was an alien / at home behind the sun). You know, just associations of ideas.

Plus, I had this cool artwork for the track, which I think fits the name quite well :-)

cheers,

Aldo

I like this a lot and I like

I like this a lot and I like the explanation of how the track was put together. I'll probably try something similar!

Not sure why (maybe Stereo width?) but the Basslines sound panned left though.

Dang, you're absolutely right

Dang, you're absolutely right. Seriously, I must have listened to this one million times, and it NEVER occurred to me. I listened again after you wrote that, and the first thing I noticed was the pan :-(

I feel like a complete tool. And yes, for apparently no good reason at all, I messed up with the stereo width.

Thanks for pointing it out, I don't think I'm going to fix this. But I will try to be more careful in the future :-)

cheers,

Aldo

I'm pretty sure most people

I'm pretty sure most people here have done it and thought it sounded awesome until someone points it out - I know I did and was baffled that it sounded 'odd' to someone else, until I listened a little more objectively.

You can use width and then pan to compensate - you keep that richness you get from using the width. It can still sound shonky though - use cautiously laugh

These days I think I tend to avoid (using) it unless it's a wide pad / string / drone type sound.
