Caustic Song file (optional):
I've posted this up a couple of times because I think it's an amazing bit of engineering and a damn nice little tune.
Who cares?
So I delved a little deeper into it and it seems there's a piano version, which has a more convincing middle bit, although it gets all a bit over complicated for my taste. However, there were the midi files for it. So I took it apart, simplified it and turned it all into patterns that sound a bit more like the marble machine.
Why?!
Well, I fancied making a remix of it so I thought I'd start with something akin to the marble machine and simplistic before I went to town with it.
And?
Because I care I love each and every one of you deeply I thought I'd share this simple version and let the Causticites go crazy with it and post up their creations here (ideally with the caustic file so we can all use it as a learning tool).
What's in the Caustic File?
Machine 1: Lead : So the main lead loop is a single 8 bar pattern A1 (And B1 to include the lead note). A2 and A3 are the middle 16 bars.
Machine 2: Bass : This is a very basic bass line, A9-16 are the bassline on C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C and A1-8 are the sharps of those where applicable
Machine 3: Chords : Using the same sound as Lead and the same pattern organisation of Bass, this a really simplified left hand
Machine 4: Drums ; A mashed up kit from various presets and tweaked to give a more or less correct sound of the marble machine
Machine 5: Flywheel : Throughout the track is the sound of the flywheel acting very rhythmically so I included an impression of this.
So please go forth, download, and remix it into a trance or d&b track, so metal, or orchestral... whatever you think might work. And then share the results with the community.
Lets get involved!
edit bit, no change tune :xd

Don't have beta, but do share your admiration for this song and the construction. I went to a Wintergatan concert and he talked about making the machine; starting out by making a box 80 by 80 cm in a room with a door 70 cm wide... Handsawing a wooden cog for days and joining them with rubber bands. There are plans to make a packable copy to be brought on tour. They used other cool instruments on stage and overall made an impression just by the musicality.
Hope to hear some cool remixes!
I'm tempted to try just to test myself. I'll atleast attempt it, but can't promise I'll be proud enough to post it hehe. But I couldnt help looking this thing up myself. And I found someone else's 8bit cover you might have missed...
hi mr.RobFarley
please tell me how you control tempo

Keyable BPM
Long-press somewhere in the sequencer timeline where you want a tempo change. This brings up a little menu (bug in double-size portrait sequencer). Press set tempo key and choose the new tempo. The app will blend between tempos between keys. You can drag keys and you can modify or delete them by long-pressing at their key time and going back to the "set tempo key" popup.

Rob, this is a really cool, community idea! I don't have beta either so I can't contribute (yet). One thing to note on this (and all other methods and technologies for making music) is that it proves that the music itself is above the mechanism that makes it. If an amazing machine like this was programmed to create a crummy song no one would be as impressed. It's a fun catchy tune all on its own, upbeat with as slight melancholy or wistful air and your challenge kind of proves the point that it wasn't the machine that made it that way.
The same can be said of Caustic, as you could spend hours creating and tweaking a synth sound but you still need to used to create good music. Anyway, thanks for this creative idea and I hope more in the community take up your challenge.

Hmm ... I might jump into this. I have some production ideas, and I want to see what spits out. I have a few projects on my plate already, but I'll see if I can squeeze this in too. Downloading the file.
Cool! I'm in. It will take a couple of weeks to finish the version I'm working on:)
So here's my version... Will upload the caustic file later

I have taken Rob's file, merged it with some things I was working on, and have a completed song. It is really just a test to see how well my sounds work with the material. Now I want to mix it up some. It is progress.
Your classical electro-rock mix was great Rob. I shouldn't have listened. It's going to be harder to just let my mine flow without comparing.
Now look what you've done RobF
Looks like i'll have a go ;)
I make creative EDM utilising Caustic and many other Daws. See for yourself on my SoundCloud, you may like it :) https://soundcloud.com/xandyaudio thanks!
Well I was going to give originality a try but I gave up. I did do quite a bit though with Rob's original file.
First I've been testing Mike's beta app Caustic Guide which I used to copy the lead and chord tracks. Then I changed those copies to pcmsynths and used a zvon preset to add a little brightness to the originals.
Then I changed the beatbox kit to one of Mike's new kits. I never asked him if I could post it, but instead I exported it as a wav and reloaded it to the pcmsynth.
And for the final touch I added a marble track using another zvon preset.

Late to the party but I set myself a 1hr challenge (DL'd 13:53, exported 14:59) on this. I'm off work sick and bored. Results:
https://soundcloud.com/lazerwound/marble-machine-vs-lw/s-QlHEt
Squishy baked-out lumpy space dub jam with Donald Duck on vocals, next to a busy astral traffic lane, in an area of the galaxy undergoing increasing thermodynamic flow.
Added... hi hats, fizzy drum disgust, an extra bass synth, extra duck solo, time dilation, lots of automation on various parameters on flywheel. I basically applied my usual MO by removing all traces of subtlety and discreetness and f'd with everything in a display of very ungentlemanly sonic thuggery.
Thanks!

I'm probably going to make a remix on this fabulous track, just need to decide which genre it's gonna be.
One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain.

Okay, so it took absolutely forever, mainly due to me completely forgetting about it. This was a good thing however, as I was able to listen and become inspired all over again. And where did that inspiration lead? Liquid Drum and Bass....of course. Added some breaks, some bass and some surprises and rolled out this remix entitled Marble Madness.

Yeah, kinda paraphrased the main melody a bit. Blends quite well with other tunes when mixed live.

That's entirely down to how honest you want to be! Was most of the work Wintergatan, me, or yourself?
Personally I credited my remix as Wintergatan first and me second.
