A WaveMixer..

Caustic Song file (optional):

Hi guys and gals..
Here is a WaveMixer.. Based on the PADsynth's architecture..
On subsynth 1, you draw the "sustain " wave..
On subsynth 2 you stat the "attack" wave..
you can add vibrato, detune, but please don't filter them..
On Modular you have one enveloppe to control the mixing of the 2 waves, ie the timbre, and one enveloppe to control the overall volume of the resulting soinds..
Tweak (and shout)..
Have a nice summer day..

But its not that practical to

But its not that practical to have 3 synthesisers dedicated to one sound when you only have 14 outputs

But it's perfectly practical

But it's perfectly practical if it's exactly what you want to do... I think in this case it's about sound synthesis. And there's always the merge rack function to make it a pcm preset.

I rarely use more than ten

I rarely use more than ten slots these days, and one of those is often some form of Machine Input i.e. Filter / Exciter, or as a control for another Machine i.e. an Arp Generator. Losing 3 slots is no biggie laugh

Hello again..

Hello again..

The reason for this experiment, was simple : it tends to respond to a question that was put on another thread, about a Wavetable synth..

http://www.singlecellsoftware.com/node/16453

I wanted to know what would a PADsynth sound like, and how usable it would be, if instead of using harmonic tables like it actually does, it were using waveforms that we could draw by ourselves..

In my experiment (but did you try to tweak it a little ??) you can draw a wave on SUBsynth 1, and another wave on SUBsynth 2, and use the envelope generators of the Modular to make a dynamic, evolving, time variable, mix of those 2 waveforms, and to shape the overall volume of the resulting sound..

yes, it uses 3 slots, and some people will find it a waste.. As Uncle said, you can still use the "merge rack" function to save the final sound, if you're satisfied with it..

It could as well use 4 or 5 slots if you were wanting to make a more complex sound, with 4 sound sources (4 SUBsynth, each one with its own waveform).. One could also add a LFO modulating the mix.. And then use the "Merge Rack" function..

But what seems to me a bigger issue, is the fact that, when modeling your sound, you have to change machine all the time.. Switching from SUBsynth 1 to Modulator, then to SUBsynth 2, then to modulator again.. Plus switching from front to rear panels on the modulator, and from front to wave-edit windows on the SUBsynthes.. This makes the process a little big bit harder, than if it were a single machine..

I'm not sure that Caustic needs more machines.. On my side, I would prefer machine improvements, like key-follow on envelope rates and on some parameters (VCF cutoff, morphing), velocity on some parameters (VCF cutoff, morphing, envelope rates).. Automation on Pitch Bend..

It was just an experiment, which I decided to share.. But if it had to happen, then I would welcome a synth which would work the way the PADsynth works, but with wave editors instead of harmonic tables..

Have a good night full of nice dreams (If you think that you're strong enough), nice dreams (If you think you belong enough), nice dreams.............

Nice trick, Thierry.

Nice trick, Thierry.

I couldn't resist to add 2 LFOs to animate the pad...wink

@Skarabee.. Bonjour vous..

@Skarabee.. Bonjour vous..
I had not in mind the fact that the LFO doesn't have a reversed output just like the enveloppe generator.. that doesn't help..
My won solution was to handle the "S" knob on ADSR 1 and turn it up/down/up/down/up/down..

@K-JF 'Still Not That

@K-JF 'Still Not That Practical'? Depends on whether you're obsessed with the limits, or excited about the possibilities.

People like Opus.Quatre, Skarabee and Paulovski are always proving how Caustic can do more, with some imagination and effort.

Yeah, shameless plug but I

Yeah, shameless plug but I spent over a year developing Caustic Guide so it could take Caustic users into a new relm.

The fact alone you can export a Group of synths hooked together with a MachineInput and import that machine setup within any of your existing or new .caustic files is pushing Caustic to the limits.

The one hurdle Rej and I could not over come was the fact we DID have a working proto of editing in my app and at the same exact time having an instance of Caustic open and pushing the machines from Guide into Caustic real time, right into your existing track.

I spoke to him the other day about an idea I had to try this again, maybe it might work, if that is the case, just ask UncleAFX or pauloviski how much they uses Guide as it is now. (without direct import into the Caustic app).

Oops, sorry Mike

Oops, sorry Mike blush

I was thinking of the people that push the Modular Synth to the limit and get really under the skin of synthesis, but yeah you're pushing the Caustic App framework to the limit with Caustic Guide and of course my favourite arranging / performance tool, Caustic Remix.

I've got two tracks that were written in Caustic and arranged in RMX that just need a quick master / edit / polish before uploading to SC.

No, actually I was stepping

No, actually I was stepping on your comment, I totally understand you were talking about Caustic's synthesis. I just meant that these more obscure techniques can be reused with Caustic Guide and not just a one time setup or duplicate .caustic and start over type thing.

Hey when you have that track that was made in Remix, post it and let people know. :)

I know a lot of people are

I know a lot of people are probably frustrated by the slow down in developments in the core Caustic App as the core functionality of the App hasn't changed, and there's no expectation that any changes are imminent, or even likely.

This is where people like Paulovksi, Skarabee, OQ really come into their own as they prove that you don't need shiny new functionality, when you can challenge yourself to be more creative instead.

And yeah, in the absence of a future roadmap, (the already excellent) Guide and Remix become even more vital tools in keeping Caustic alive in the minds of its users.

No need to ask me how useful

No need to ask me how useful I find Caustic Guide. I'll tell you. And OQ has posted a very good example why.
So. Three machines set up to make some pretty cool sounds and you're thoroughly encouraged to tweak. Who knows where that will end? After a bit of waveform editing, parameter adjustment, desk eq, fx addition, automation, maybe a filter or two, whatever floats your boat, you end up with a glorious, unique supersound and it's a shame that this wonderful setup is in this song file. And not in the project you were working on just before you downloaded this one, where it might possibly fit in very nicely.
You could resample it, but something like this is bound to need a few minor tweaks to make it fit in a new environment. Better to keep it all live and transfer the whole setup as if it were one big preset. And Caustic Guide let's you do that very easily. Once it all fits nicely, then resample it to free up some tracks.
Using setups like this WaveMixer is far from impractical. Even less so with a copy of Guide.

Thought I'd add a delayed

Thought I'd add a delayed  morphing LFO to the mix.

I´m not discussing this. I´m here only to wish the charming Causticers present in this thread, a lovely summer day/evening/night.
It´s winter somewhere too, but I don´t pay attention to that. Stay strong!! :D

Tell that to Jason, who has made some awesome stuff doing just that in his Builderz preset packs.

This is exactly why I made Caustic Guide, you can save out Builderz presets and load them into any new or existing .caustic file

Well it's called Caustic

Well it's called Caustic Remix now, I have been doing quite a bit of things but I have a beta version on my site, it's the Ableton/Bitwig scene/clip launcher paradigm.

The last 4 months I have been working on other apps mainly Guide the drum machine and a groove box. (I will be getting back to this app sooner than later).

See this thread with James's track he made in it.

http://www.singlecellsoftware.com/node/16512

This is the clip launcher as it is right now;

This is the arranger, the graphics are screwed up from a previous framework change but this is what I just recorded. You can export these as .caustic files or wav files. There is a lot more to do with this screen, but it will beable to edit the track entries and other things plus multiple automation runs.

BTW, Caustic Remix can load

BTW, Caustic Remix can load Sounds created in Caustic Guide. Plus I should be creating pattern sets. So you can load up disjoint Caustic library items, assemble them in Remix and make a new track, that you could also save to a Template and load into Guide again for further dissection.
