*sigh* This might be a long read. If you're just after a working build and are sick of my excuses, scroll down to the bottom of this post.
After a long, restful xmas break I've set out to update my apps and finally release this mastering app. I worked all week to put a few final touches on the mastering. Like all lot of you said, it's fine for an initial relase the way it is now, and we can worry about improvements later. The first step is getting something out. Putting it on the Play store also means it won't just expire on you guys and I thank those who've stuck around during this whole mess.
Now I've got everything ready, including a free demo version as well so people can try before buying. My Play store listings are complete and ready to publish. I uploaded one of my APKs and was told it was compiled using targetting an old Android version and that they were raising the bar on which Android version you had to target. No problem, I'll just update my development kit to get the newer version kit and rebuild.
Well, no.
You see I've been developing for Android since version 1.6, when the tools were pretty crude but simple. And Google continued supporting those old tools for years because hey, they still worked (I know for a fact that many at Google were still using them too). But it seems as though in a push to simplify their maintenance and security, they're now forcing everyone to use the new toolset. (I'm sure Mike and others know exactly what I'm talking about)
So, now I've got this pretty big project (and other HUGE projects like Caustic) that I need to migrate over. And because my projects all use lots of native C++ code and very little Java, their simple migration wizards doesn't work. I'm now staring at the mastering app in a new toolset, with pages and pages of errors I don't understand. I think the solution might be to start a blank project from scratch and bring in all my code. This isn't a huge deal, and I'm confident I can get it sorted but it will take me a few days to figure everything out.
The current build of Mastering expires at the end of the week and I assure you it was my plan to have it published before then, but it doesn't look like it's going to happen. Rather than stress even more about this impending date, I've decided to put out yet another beta.
Thanks for hanging in there with me.
Caustic Mastering - beta7
Thank you very much sir! I had been wanting to try this mastering app I kept reading about and finally grabbed one of the expired betas thinking maybe I'll use the date work around just so I can take a look at it. By crazy coincidence, it turns out that you had posted a new beta like an hour earlier..
I've barely poked around the Mastering app and I'm already excited to purchase the final version.. Thanks again!
Thank you so much....I had always hoped there would be more to come....I have Been using caustic since somewhere in the early 2 phase...I have FL12, and an older version of cakewalk....but truly I always use caustic to produce. it just has the smoothest and simplest flow for me....and I love it.... I always include a plug about the program in every track I release....the mastering app is a cool project... But I'm most Excited about the news about a caustic update.....so excited
There are a few things I am requesting you to consider,
Please can we have at least four more tracks...can we have at least one more effect per channel...one more master effect, a five band eq effect, and the ability to lable and colour coordinate our patterns....thank you so much
Nice to hear from you Rej. Thanks for the new beta and I'm sure you've got a whole bunch of sales waiting to happen once you get your head round the new tools. Be well, and keep up the good work. Happy to help where I can to get this stuff past the finish line.

Heh, yes man I know this pain.
If you have any questions about anything just email me.
Thank you is all I can say now.. Also I'm really happy that "Mastering" works on Linux (Wine). Thank you for putting in tons of effort for these amazing tools ^^
I am really happy, cuz rej is back
Iam happy and curious and excited also for future!
Love you rej sir!!!!

Hi Rej, it is good for people to see the human behind the program. I can understand the great frustration of thinking something is nearly complete and then finding out it is not, and that there is a lot of work yet to do.
Nobody should be unhappy continuing to use the working beta and Everybody should be happy to purchase the finished product when it is available.

Makes me sad to see words like "sigh", "excuses" and "assure" in Rej's post. So unnecessary.
Especially considering the circumstances. Forced upgrades to the software artists and musicians use have been often problematic for a long time. Sometimes you have to adapt to a completely different visual interface or workflow, bugs, porting/importing/exporting or licensing issues, compatibility with other software/hardware... guess being a little myopic never really considered how that also affects other people across the spectrum.
Also, thank you.

Cool birthday gift for me!!!
thanks a lot Rej!
No excuses needed !!!!!!! I'm just very happy to see that caustic and mastering will not become abandonware. Take your time Rej!
♬ Aliens approaching...
Good to see you are still alive and kicking, Rej! Sorry about your troubles with Gaagle. My only use for them is the occasional Yousless Tube vid. The APK failed to install on my remaining POS android device. No worries. Do you anticipate any ios love in the future? Korg Gadget 2 is lame. NanoStudio 2 is very nice. I’d love to send you some money via the Apple App Store.
Thank you sir, for updating. I would like to have caustic mastering beta (pro). But Sir I would like you to add voice effect, master effect and 5 EQ band, so that we may still and get eternal entertainment. I support u and I'll stay with you, thanks 4ur effort.

Mastering has a parametric EQ so why would you want a 5 band EQ?

Hey Rej I'm a beat producer that can't get enough of your Caustic & Mastering applications, I love your mobile apps so much that all I do is promote and promote your incredible mobile apps to get more and more producers like me all over YouTube into liking caustic like I do, so I been very active since I first started making music in caustic mobile and promoting the app, I think I promote more the app then my own music ☺ I really don't know what it is about caustic mobile that makes me feel part of a movement even though I'm just one of a few, but I really think I'm the most active in YouTube making music with just the Android mobile app no pc, any way Rej what I really wanted to say was to thank you, so thank you so much for creating this mobile app and the Mastering app too, and even though caustic 3 is perfect for producing music, I can't wait what will come next on a new update,
((like maybe the option for ghost notes in the pianoroll which can be a great help in simplifying the work flow when making Melody's))
((Also like maybe an autotime stretch for samples to sync to the bpm, that would be great))
((And maybe some more edit option on the sequencer like for example, a slice tool, making possible to cut the middle or the beginning of a pattern which is better then making a new pattern just to takeout the beginning or middle notes of the pattern just to create a paused anywhere in a pattern))
((And maybe to able to add a full wav audio like acapellas in sequencer without going to all that trouble of cutting it into 3 or 4 parts just to be able to add it the mix))
Anyway again thank you Rej for caustic mobile especially for the Android version, because I can't afford an iPhone, plus I love Android!!
Sorry for my English, it's not my official language

This is by far my most used Android app. Thank you so much for the new beta and will definitely be buying the full version as soon as you release it.
#James I was unable to install #Mastering app to my android device, But I'll try to install it to another phone, and try to see how that EQ works.

Okay, I can see now, it is working and I like it 100%

Oh yes, I know what you mean, Rej. Migrating to AS can be a real nightmare. Also, targeting the required min sdk will probably force you to implement the newer Android M permission model.
However, if you need help at any point, always feel free to fire me a mail.
Oh wow... Nice :)
I make creative EDM utilising Caustic and many other Daws. See for yourself on my SoundCloud, you may like it :) https://soundcloud.com/xandyaudio thanks!
thx for the mastering app rej, but my birthday was on feb 23 so ure late. :P.
Just joking i just bought mikes 2 (caustic music engine using) apps great stuff too but dint see a way how to import my modified
PCMSynth BeatBox - Modular synths into Drum Pad Beats?
so came to chek this forum does that mastering tool also allow to export as a .dpbkit?
i think mike will read this post to as he is the webmaster ;) so for mike maybe you can make some import function I saw you have caustic guide does that do the trick of importing modular and pcm synths into your sequecer? I read @Exported Lil Drum Machine dpdkit files auto load.@
so you want me to export all as wav then import in lildrum and then export as dpdkit? like omg. I hope im overlooking something but in one of ure youtubes you say well only get to use your sample and syth kits? I understand you hope to generate extra income but your cripling another great android music app , feels like you decide wich sounds i have to use if i use your tool maybe that was teached as way to power in old comunist block :P
okay a belated happy new year to all caustic lovers, and for Rej if you have to rewrite the keyboard part plz implement 3 zones per key with highest = soft medium = normal and lowest part = hard velocity so we can play in diffrent volumes even if the display has no force feedback. Just my 2 cents If you just stop working on caustic its ok for me too. You totaly swept away all otherswith the work you have done and how accesable youve made eletronic music making too the masses. A bit like bjorks debut lp and prodgys fat of the land , where i also thought if you make such great product you can for the rest of your life rest on your laurels. So dont worry just stay healthy and godbless you.
This app is really great even only in beta. I literally just mastered a song perfectly with it.
With caustic 3 and mastering, bro (or sis) you are unstoppable.

I'm so sorry that the change to the new development environment broke so many things and that instead of converting you have to bring all your code into new projects for compiling.
I'm sure this brings many frustrating challenges to overcome, and the frustration must be even moreso because you thought you were done.
I remember worrying that the new version of android might break Caustic. I would be so heartbroken to lose Caustic I would probably switch to an old phone that can't run newer versions of Android.
When the frustration is getting you down, I want you to remember that what you've accomplished is AWESOME!
Caustic has brought us such incredible joy and enabled us to unleash our creativity with a decent music studio we carry in our pockets.
I can't tell you how much I absolutely adore caustic. It's my favorite app for android ever.
Things like the 8bit synth are unique. The breath of audio machines and effects in caustic is positively robust. There's so many smart design choices in caustic that make it very and quickly usable, yet also powerful and flexible. You're instructional videos are really well done. It's really an amazing app. It's even more impressive that this is the work of one man.
We are all very lucky that you continue to work on this projects, your work is top notch.
Please feel our love and appreciation <3

end of line.
And it's becoming even worse. Android Q Beta1 revealed that the times of free storage access is over.
https://developer.android.com/preview/privacy/scoped-storage
In short, it will no longer be possible to access the shared file system by the external storage permission.
Developers can either choose to use the private sandbox storage for an app (which means no more external add on packs, as those cannot place the samples into the private folders of the host app), or to use the Storage Access Framework (developers will know what pain this is).
Android Q is the end of Android as an open system. This is truly a black day!
Just wanted to say thanks for the continued efforts!
Dang, I can’t believe they locking android all up like they do with iPad, the one thing I loved about droid was all the freedom. What a shame!! Thanks planetH for all you do!
https://m.youtube.com/user/selfinflict3?feature=mhum
Folks, Android is not getting locked up lika an iPad.
I have read a lot of the documentation and although they are now putting "locks" on the public doors, they are giving devs and single devs with multiple apps ways to share with roles and such.
This might actually open up better ways of sharing data on Android inter app.
Wait and see, this affects me as well but I am looking at it positively.
I drove decent tests already, and yes it opens "other" ways, ways that force users to do things exactly the opposite way that they're used to, ways that feel like a workaround, ways that take twice as long to execute the same task, and most of all... intransparent ways.
But yes, there are some benefits, e.g. the easy integration of cloud storages.
@planeth Yeah but I am a glass is half full type of guy so I can't worry about what a corporation is making me change.
Haha This is what happens in software development when using other's frameworks.
All I know is I knew it was only a matter of time before Google axed the public memory access free for all. Yeah that is the way we expect on a PC or whatever but 4 year olds are downloading apps now, so.....
@mike You're probably right, Mike. At the end, we code for the future. Your optimism makes me kinda feel better;)
I just started with Caustic... what an awesome app, and a lot to explore... But I am on iOS, so any plans to port Mastering app to iOS like Caustic? And even MacOS X like Caustic? That would indeed be awesome.
But I am sorry to read about all the work you need to do to update on Android. So I guess it will be a no... :(
This mastering tool is really GOOD! Any plans for IOS?
I am in love. Wonderful.
The workflow is just perfect.
Works so good.
Wow
Update. it looks like it's working with the "new" toolset. Can I please ask Android users to uninstall the last version and try this one instead:
http://www.singlecellsoftware.com/download/Mastering_1.0.0_RC1.apk
You should see a popup asking for permission to access files (we'll deal with the upcoming Android Q file access mess later I suppose) but apart from a few UI tweaks, it should be the same app.
There will be a secret, experimental effect revealed when the app launches.
As for those asking about iOS. Yeah the plan is still to release this there as well, but it seems you can't just release a straightforward music app without all the integrated plugin support + audiobus + Ableton link + whatever flavour of the month is without getting nailed in reviews anymore so I need to look into those again...
Installed and working, everything seems to work as expected... I'll have a bash at breaking it and see what happens.
Excellent work as alway, you should do this as a job...!

RC1 : release candidate 1
My latest track on show and tell
My Soundcloud page
Been using the RC1 for about a week now and have not noticed any crashes or issues.
Throwing two questions out there as I'm finalizing and packing things up.
1 - Has anyone made use of effects chain presets? if so would you be willing to share them with me for distribution, please email to causticapp@gmail.com and include a description of when you use them and why.
2 - Has anyone made "skins" for the mastering app. I seem to recall a few made in the early beta days but it's been a while and I can't find any threads. If there no need for it, I'll just remove the option...
I have made an app that could make these skins, was that 4 years ago or something? I made a bunch! haha but I think those are on PCs HDs 2-3 generations back. :)
I think you should leave it in Rej, since these are just palette skins, there are pretty easy to make.
