Sure looks like an FM synth to me! I only half (or less) know what I'm doing so I defer to greater knowledge.
One little tip I picked up from paulovski, if you run a synth thru a mixer you can boost the signal, in this case feeding the FM input, and make it a bit more extreme. Also works great to slam the AM or Mod inputs.
Also interesting that if you slightly detune the modulator it alters the pitch significantly more than detuning the carrier. I would have assumed the opposite. So much to learn...

Here's one with a feedback loop attached to the modulator. The filter is necessary in the feedback loop as a sort of attenuator to avoid it exploding into noise (picked that up from the Karpus - Strong thread although the K35 filter doesn't attenuate as well, at least not in this case. Why? No fuckin idea!). Also necessary to attach the Note CV to the filter cutoff or the filter doesn't track the pitch and when you start playing outside of a small tuned range it bursts into noise.
Feedback level is controlled by the marked IN2 knob. Pretty aggressive sound for two sine waves.
The only difference between the 3rd and 4th ModSynth is the Note CV to the feedback loop mixer. Huge difference though as you'll see/hear. Used sine waves to show max tonal variation. Added different ratios too, all hail instructional videos!
If you tweak a sound and find some notes freak out or spit, adjust the filter Cutoff.
Also, tweaking the Cut and Res knobs of the filter yields some cool and unforseen results. Never dawned on me, if you boost Resonance at the Cutoff you introduce, I'm guessing, more FM. However, that seems to cost in useable range before it barfs noise.

Changed the WG's to all sine waves for more sonic clarity.
And a trivial FWIW, these overtones produce a lydian-dominant tonality, the 4th mode of the melodic minor scale. Rarely used outside jazz, the themes to The Simpsons and Jetsons are good examples. If Joe Satriani was just a tad quirkier he might have tried it out on Flying In A Blue Dream. Vai would have.
