So I've been messing with the KSSynth for who knows how long trying to replicate a decent Sitar sound that has a sort of Japanese or Egyptian feel to it. It ends up sounding all jarred and ugly. Needless to say, I give up. Does anybody have this kind of preset or can offer some tips? Think Muriels sitar from Courage the Cowardly Dog, to get a feel for what I'm aiming at. Am I using the right synth for this kind of sound?
Looking for a Sitar preset
Sitar is pretty difficult to emulate for many reasons (sympathetic vibrations etc.) but I'll keep my eyes open for some decent samples. Meanwhile you can get a "sorta" decent ethnic sound with a little work and planning. Here's an example (Sortar, cause it's sorta like a sitar/koto). If you have any questions about it feel free to ask. Maybe someone else will come up with something better, fingers crossed!, cause I'd love that.

Actually, this sounds pretty neat for a 8-bit song. I'm gonna try tweaking this a bit to see if I can get somewhere. Thanks for the example!
Thanks, and you're welcome, I had fun throwing it together. Not really sure I know what you mean by 8 bit music thiugh.

16-bit, maybe? Its the crap you hear in a 2D side scroller game

Sometimes it's called Chiptune. (8-bit game scores)
Don't be calling my musical excrements "crap"! And no Mike, it didn't sound like chiptune (ugh... memories of the Westworld composition challenge winner are now flooding my Mario-addled brain).
Anyways, made some kinda reasonable sitar PCM thing. Seeing as how I had the Courage to do it hopefully no one will be Cowardly enough to call it Dog poop.

Dog log?
I get sitar noises from finding, or creating any single hit metalic ping, or even some 'guitar' preset single hit. And then shove it through plenty of sustain and resonance, cut-off etc, and have fun till you get what you need. Any sound can become sitarish or didgeridooish, or 303-ish, very quickly once you grasp those envelope additives (modules).
