I have a question. Are the creators of caustic 3 still around or did they abandoned the development of the software. Cause I seen it's been a while since it's updated.
You can dream about the new version, but that's it. It won't be updated anymore, and probably as new android versions come out it will stop working. It's updated regularly and works good. I don't understand why you guys still struggling with caustic and waiting for new version. Especially if you use pc. It has great DAWs like fl studio, ableton, reaper, cakewalk and many other. Caustic has lots of limitations compared to these softwares. So if you are on android I recommend use fl studio mobile or maybe g stomper. That is also good, but a little bit more complicated than fl. And lord_bondslave are you kidding? Who said that? Whoever was is a liar. Caustic won't be updated.
I started using caustic a while back like 3 months just messing around with it. When I saw that it's haded been updated in a while I thought maybe the creators where still working on it and their were a few bumbs on long the way. But after looking around it's as though the software has been abandoned. I would consider switch to Ableton or fl, but I don't have a computer nor the money in order to use the software. It sucks that cuastic isn't getting more updates then it should. It's a really good software, a bit rough around the edge, but overall a decent one none the less.

The Thursday comment is a long running joke. Caustic is not actually abandoned. It may see an update, and it may not. There may be better software out there, and there may not. It depends on perspective. Caustic wasn't originally meant to compete with the likes of FL Studios, Abelton, or whatever your flavor is. Caustic was hoped to be a dem' good Android DAW, and in that it succeeded. It works different than Sunvox or G-stomper, and a lot of people prefer that.
Saying Caustic would be out on Thursday came out of people asking about once a week, and a number of people replying with opinions that it would never be updated, when it was clear they really didn't know. Rej has not said the project is dead. Rej has not said it will get updated either. The program still works for a lot of people. I grant, one of the reasons I still use it is because of love lines. I had fun being part of this community. I still throw on the Nautilus or Night skins now and then because of old times. I still write pieces and parts of songs using it because I just simply enjoy doing so. Listen to the trolls if you want to. Believe it is dead if that is your thing. I know for a fact people are still picking up Caustic for the first time and getting good use out of it. Dead, my ass.
Caustic still has stability on android 12.. remeber it came out on android 2.0.. Ten years the app is working. Of course it will not work on flagship device since those phones have chips that are built for next 3 years of new apps, bit it will work always on mid range, and low end devices that support midi.
I am a new caustic user, found out about this daw just 5 months ago and I'm stunned and find it to be the best one for mobile, the process of making music is so intuitive and fun! Never seen anything like this piece of software and I tried lots of Daws before! I think Caustic should be Open Source so we can still keep developing it, this has the potential to change the music production game for ever. And i'm not even joking, it has been years since this app has been updated and the community is still active, I still find new youtube videos, softwares with this kind of support around them are more unique than rare! Caustic team wake up!!! Your app is perfect, you just need marketing! And I see your community would do anything to help, me too
As for alternatives (for Android), I found Fruity Loops (fl studio) ok but kinda lacking and... meh. Not my cup of tea. But that's really subjective, people should spend a little time adjusting to any new software before making decisions, sometimes you first have to get past the initial learning curve.
Don't sleep on Roland Zenbeats/Zentracker. Powerful, great sounds, solid performance and frequent updates. If you do you might be missing out. Like Caustic, it's far deeper on the inside than it appears to be. But once you understand it's workflow & capabilities it's quick and easy to use.
It's completely free if you don't want extras, and almost fully functional (you can save and edit all you want). If you can live without the cheesy preset sample and loop packs you can purchase the whole thing outright for about 20 bucks

and get tons of other fx and presets as well as full access to all the sampler, ZC1 etc. parameters, no licensing fees at all, although when you look to purchase it you'll see multiple options. But look harder, there a cheap single purchase option in there as well. It's also cross platform compatible and if you own any Roland gear you can port the presets straight to the hardware.
The drum "machine" in Zenbeats seems well beyond what Caustic can do. Virtually unlimited samples for any kit, numerous parameters for every sample (like one click to instantly reverse any sample). Samples (and loops) can be instantly stretched, pitch shifted, or both; you can have different EQ and any FX you want per drum, not just the whole kit. Different reverb settings for the snare than the hi hats? No problem. Different Eq for the kick? Easy. Compressor on the snare, limiter on the kick, expander on the ride cymbal? Again, simple to do.
Modifying velocities or any of the many available parameters seems quicker and more versatile. I still appreciate Caustic for some things but at this point it's falling behind the competition.
One of the only things lacking in Zenbeats is a good modular synth but the samplers in Zenbeats are quite powerfu and support SFZ.
As for Modsynth options, for Android you have Hexen which is considerably more powerful than Caustic's modsynth in many ways. And on PC and Mac you have VCV rack which is free I believe and again seems more powerful than Caustic's modsynth.
And then there's Csound which is available for free on every platform out there and is hands down the most powerful piece of music software around if you know how to code in C/C++. Everything from convolution to insanely versatile granular synthesis, physical modeling, unlimited oscillators for any instrument, unlimited amount of instruments, literally dozens if not hundreds of ways to manipulate samples and loops, every possible type of synthesis you can think of and then some... there is probably very few things it can't do. Granted, the interface on Android is not great unless you use the Cabbage front end, especially for RT performance, but on other OS there are some really good front ends so you don't need to write any code. But it's still cool the option is there.
It's ability to randomize any parameter or all parameters in any or all instruments, and to create aleatoric music, is likely unparalleled except for possibly PureData and Max and I find neither of those as intuitive and flexible as Csound. I wrote a beautiful soundtrack quality piece using the Mandelbrot set... try doing that in any other software (good luck...).
I was an avid user of Caustic for years and still have a certain love for it and use it for a few things but at this point it's falling behind the rest pack and is just not nearly a complete enough DAW for me to invest much more time and energy into. To quote Metallica, Sad But True.
