How many projects do you start (and not finish?)

I must admit it's one of my bad habits.

I'll be working on a song and typically have an idea that i record in a new song or write down and then never finish.

Even worse are those brilliant intros or verses that you create and then can't do anything else with.

I read a songwriting tip that said the way to break it is to stick with the song until you finish it. Don't worry where it takes you because regardless of how it ends up sounding you may find new styles, sounds or techniques you wouldn't have otherwise used.

That sounds like good advice to me!

I've had some projects go

I've had some projects go bust..... but may pick up later, when I get inspired or a cool idea.   Same with sound creation.   I have folders of folders of audio data I've recorded and processed that never make it into an expansion pack..... maybe 6 months later, I'll remember something and dig back and grab those sounds and then resume my current project with them...

The biggest thing I could recommend, is that if you start to get  burned out from it, take a break!   Even if it means a day or two, by all means keep your sanity.... It will get better and you'll be refreshed with a clear head to resume your project.

Haha! We're in the same page

Haha! We're in the same page here. I always got the music producers block when I can't think of how to follow up the tune. This is what I do, I just keep listening to tracks that inspire me and experiment by making random sounds. If I haven't finished a track, I make a new one then somehow include the one that I saved on the new one. Inspiration leads me to create music.

'stick with the song until

'stick with the song until you finish it'

I agree with  that try to stick with it, and i do what colormetry does.  I try to only have two uncompleted projects going at a time. If i feel blocked switching back and forth seems to help.  And I always have a third 'blank song' set up to play with new found sounds and exsperiment with. And like jblann1 says when it's not fun , take a break. I usally read a eBook.

Aww man...

Sooo many.  I have literally 200+ .Caustic files backing up my 32GB SDcard and have completed (that's a loose definition, many are never really finished) roughly 35-40 of them.  The thing is, I won't delete them because often upon listening to an old incomplete track it'll spark up some creativity & draw me closer to finishing it.  The other reason I keep all of them, even after "completion", is that ideas come to me later & I'll revisit and refine. In fact, I have a couple right now that were finished tracks (again) which have undergone a lot of post-production and become new songs.  I'm gonna upload them today I think.

I agree

Sometimes it can drive you crazy.  I hit a brick wall with it about a month ago, but things are picking up again.  Gotta take a break sometimes or I can just disappear up my own ass with these projects

:D

I am like a dog with a bone

I am like a dog with a bone and wont let it go until it is finished. If it doesn't work I bin it and move on. If it was meant to be it will come back again
