Here's some stuff I know might be useful that is either buried deep in the manual or maybe not there at all:
Default Rack: By default, Caustic starts every new song with a certain machine selection, the default machines from Caustic 1. If you find yourself swapping out machines to the same set for every new song, here's a tip that will save you a few taps:
- Start a new song
- Place the machines you want to use as your new default
- Save the "song" as "defaultrack" (without quotes of course)
Now, every time you press "new song" it will effectively load that one automatically. You can even store patterns and loaded samples if that saves you time. If you want to change it back to default behavior, just delete the "defaultrack" song.
Playbook/BB10 bug: You'll have to rename the file to lower-case letters as the code looks for "defaultrack.caustic" but the file gets saved as "DEFAULTRACK.caustic". Do this by connecting your playbook/BB10 device to a PC via USB.
fed up with just getting a one osc sound out of the bassline machines?
simple!fatten up the sound by using chorus and tinkering with depth and rate will give you a bass more suited for dubstep and drum n bass and techno
gives you a sound reminiscent of mentasm by joey beltram
Or sample it by saving a played note as a wav file, then take that wav back into pcmsynth for further processing, filtering, modulation etc... i made a reece-bass sound this way...
yeah you can get an Alex Reese bass that way, similar to his first track "pulp fiction"
i asked him back in the nineties how he made that bass sound. He sampled it off an 80's house tune.
i think he reversed it too but im not sure about that.
i used to be signed to skeleton recordings and later Dj Raps label proper talent. If you need any connections for Drum and Bass labels i can help as i am in London UK and know all the pioneers of the scene.
Neither works for me on the Playbook.
The default rack trick is explained very clearly, so I guess it's safe to say it doesn't work.
The bassline trick I find rather confusing, so perhaps you would be willing to rephrase it, so I can try again and make sure it doesn't work.
Thank you.
The bassline trick was from when the bassline used the step sequencer rather than a piano roll

It's probably another case-sensitive issue with playbook, sorry. I just looked at the code and it's looking for a lower-case "defaultrack" file so try renaming it via file browser to see if that does the trick.
As DJBR said, the second one (bassline) no longer applies, I'll remove it.
Well, duh! I should have thought about that.
You are right. I renamed the defaultrack file to lowercase and it worked. But not very well.
When I launched Caustic, I could see for a split second that the very first, topmost machine was no longer the Bassline. It was the Beatbox, according to my desired template. But then Caustic closed or crashed. Then I tried to launch it again, and it failed. I saw a black window popping up, but it shut down almost immediately. I tried and I tried and eventually it worked. And the template was working as expected, the machine layout looked just like I had intended. And I created a new song, and once again the new song was created in compliance with my layout template.
But then I closed Caustic and tried to launch it again and... Summing up, it crashed most of the time. Sometimes it would launch on the third or fourth attempt, but often I had to try about a dozen times to make Caustic run successfully. I eventually decided that was a terrible deal and gave up, and renamed the defaultrack file to something else.
Caustic is launching fine now, always on the very first attempt, like it used to. I guess I'll just get used to keeping the template song empty and opening it instead of creating a new song, then changing it and saving it under a different name. No big deal, I suppose.
Thank you for your attention.
Oh, that's a bug then. I'll charge up the Playbook to have a look. Sorry.
Or what you can do is create a Song Template and save it as a Song, then you have it ready to go. I have several templates for different projects that I work with involving the App.
