Real original orchestra samples

If you like to use real world samples, like me, you can get a bunch of them here:

http://sso.mattiaswestlund.net/download.html

This philharmonic orchestra went through the trouble of recording all notes from all instruments - and you can use them in a PCMSynth in Caustic!!

Some interesting sounds there

Some interesting sounds there yes....  But a few notes though....

These are stereo samples, so importing them into Caustic will be summed mono, which may or not create phase issues, depending on mic positions and spread and diaphram type on the original recordings.....    you will need to set your own loop points for pretty much every sample for every instrument (good luck if you got the stomach for that haha).... etc...

You know I would do it and create a super orchestral pack, but I don't own any rights to these recordings, so I'm gonna pass for such a daunting project.

But for on-the-fly sound grabs and bites, these samples may be useful for some application here (waiting for Wardini.....cool)

Well, they're released under Creative Commons, so unless they use the CC version which forbids modification and commercial use, you'd be free to do what you want as long as you credit them. :D (I haven't checked which precise variant of CC they use because I haven't downloaded the whole thing yet.)

This is the licence in the pack:

http://creativecommons.org/licenses/sampling+/1.0/

Now .. I can't load SFZ files buuuuuuuuuuut .. if you grab a bunch of samples from the same set in one of the directories, say the "Flute" directory. Go in there, select all .. Add to compressed file (ZIP)

Launch Caustic 3... Plop down a trusty PCMSynth, tap the preset browser, find your ZIP file and load it ... surprise...angel

If you open the SFZ file (they're just text), you'll see some of the samples need pitch adjustments and might have different hi-low keys but loading them as a set from ZIP should save you lots of time if you just want something quick. The few I've tried so far sound great.

I don't think the licence excludes distributing this as a free kit, as long as attribution is maintained.

Hi,

Hi,

First of all, I'm recently bought Caustic 3 for iPad and I'm really impressed. There is a thread on the Audiobus forum (Audiobus is an app for IOS that routes audio between different apps) where you can find links to free sf2 soundfonts. On of the forum members converted the Sonatina sfz file to sf2 format.

http://forum.audiob.us/discussion/comment/22105#Comment_22105

http://forum.audiob.us/discussion/1400/soundfonts/p1

A question for the developer: the feature list of Caustic 3 states that: The PCMSynth can also load SoundFont files (.sf2) and FL Studio mobile instruments (.instr, .ZIP). I've converted the entire Sonatina Library to Music Studio instr. format, but loading these into the PCM synth doesn't work. I get a preset without samples. The developer of Music Studio was asked the same question and said that he never shared the details of the instr. format and was pretty sure that Caustic can't open instr. files. Any comments?

I've converted the entire Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra library for use in Xewton Music Studio. The developer of Music Studio liked it and has asked Mattias Westlund who created Sonatina Symphonc Orchestra for permission. Westlund agreed and Alex from Xewton has included the entire Sonatina library in his app (Music Studio now comes with the Sonatina library). I guess this clears the way for use of the Sonatina orchestra in other apps too (hint...)

Caustic 3.1 should be able to

Caustic 3.1 should be able to load the Sonatina SFZs directly now. Instr format loading is pretty experimental and limited to older versions of MusicStudio /FL (when it they still shared a common format)

I'm not sure about bundling hundreds of Mbs of classical instruments when most of my users are into electronic music though.

I always prefer a situation

I always prefer a situation where the user can choose the content they want to load rather than have to install a lot of sounds by default that they may never use.

Rej perhaps you could host the Sonatina sounds on this website as free PCM Synth sound packs if you can find somebody who's willing to edit/loop them all and save them as PCM Synth presets.

I dont think is gonna happen.

I dont think is gonna happen.... Uploading the entire soundset is going to cause major traffic issues which will result in many complaints and emails to Rej and Mike saying that SCS is down or they can't access..... From my perspective tracking downloads of my free content in recent weeks is in the thousands per week.... That is why I won't host much of anything big on SCS servers, will soon move all over to my site, when I get my big update on that finished later this spring.

My gut says, bad idea. If someone did make them all into PCM presets, that individal should host it on their site or online storage, with the originalauthor's blessing of course...

Man, I wish I understood any of this on more than a surface level. Time to do some research on sound fonts for me. I'm still not even sure what works in caustic besides wavs.

At this point has anyone edited any of the orchestra samples to work in Caustic?

I need to reread Rej's post on how to open them because it went over my head on first read.

I have made a handful of

I have made a handful of presets from the samples myself, but many of them need to be properly looped, and the summed-mono merge of audio may lead to unwanted phase cancelations and other balance issues, that I ran into when I made the presets for a few things I tried out.....  I gave up on it after a while, because it was becoming too daunting of a task to justify the effort.

My $.02, but I honestly don't think it's worth the effort.    The sounds are decent, and those who would use the sounds are best served, creating target instruments themselves for their own personal project.   I created a four part string section for a track I helped a guy out with, and got decent results, but wouldn't easily integrate into most other projects.   Just ask MaggieBlue..... she's done some incredible things with it, but even she's told me she has some struggles with it.

Soundsets of this magnitude on a mobile music workstation app, is not an easy matchup, but some of you have found a way to make it work, which I think is cool. cool

Thanks Jason. I was thinking of just weeding out a few choice tidbits to mess with ( feel like strings into a modular machine input could get pretty wicked if tweaked right). I have the download on file and will prob grab it at somepoint with the laptop and have my first go at deep PCM- ing.

Tried to load some

Tried to load some instruments from SSO (sfz format) on Android Caustic 3.1.2. It mostly loads fine but some notes do not sound, seemingly as the low / high keys are not read properly. Any fix for this?

Adjust the low and high keys

Adjust the low and high keys for each sample in the PCMSynth and save as a preset. I've found that Soundfonts don't always port over to PCMSynth "properly" but they're a start. Tweak parameters and loop points as necessary.

Some sound fonts only have a particular range. I have found some Orchestra samples that don't go higher or lower of what the actual instrument plays. Keeps it sounding "real".

Hello, friends.

Hello, friends.
This is what I use:

Strings (Bellatrix Orchestra Final)
Oboe (BOF)
English Horn (FluidR3)
Bassoon (BOF)
Snare (SGM stereo edited :D)
Trumpet (symphony hall)
Trombone (SGM)
French Hrons (FluidR3)
Tuba (BOF)

Bellatrix stuff has been converted from l and r to a single instrument in stereo with caustic v3.2

The caustic file is older. The song on soundcloud has updates to the standards I use. It also is made with caustic 3.2.

OMG, love your track Pokebunny, very good quality :) Also it reminds me of an old old game I used to play on the Nintendo 64 called Army Men Sarges Heroes :) The first half of your song would really go well with that game :)

There is A LOT of free sounds available on the net if you hunt around hard enough ;-)

For orchestral sounds try here. The SSO site is now closed but Versil studios have took up the cause and offer a huge library (2gig) for FREEEEEEE
