It’s been a while since the last challenge, I think Andy Bones Cheese Challenge was the last one (anyone heard from him lately?). Lately I’ve seen the subsynth come to good use in the community… so I thought, maybe its time for a subsynth challenge?
I’m thinking no specific rules, just do what you want as long as you do it with subsynths. For drums you can go for a PCM if you want but all other instruments should be subsynths. Of course you may download the presets to use, you don’t have to create them your self. It would be nice to view the .caustic file but its your choice if you want to provide it.
So… what you say? Any one in?
I wanted to have a look at the subsynth pack you posted earlier...
It'll probably be a couple of weeks, but I'll try and give it a go :)
This is about Caustic so I'm happy to move it to Show 'n Tell.
The challenge could be made more specific if we have to use the presets of your pack (?)
Nah, I rather see people get creative and decide for them self what sounds to be used. But if more people like your idea there it's ok by me.
Hmmmmm.......
Part way through, 5 sub-synths, one BB.

heres my subsynth challenge track,...all subsyths except one pcmsynth for drums.
Excellent! Really nice beat and sounds. Good variations in the song to. Good one Danjdob.
thanks
Here's my little subsynth track, my normal hallmarks in full effect. Aiming for hypnotic rather than monotonic but who knows.

I hope I've not cheated by using BB not PCM!
I deleted the drums rack and all the patterns 4 or 5 times today before just sticking something simple in.
Did consider a drum free version but would have needed to completely change the arrangement.

Using BB is definitely not cheating, I’m using it myself in my song (almost finished). Good sounds you made there and a very nice mix to.
several of them are yours! I've certainly used a percussive, bass and a lead sound from your pack, although the lead one has been used for the sparkly drone that kicks in after about 1 min :)
I also cheated a little by relying on phaser, flangers and chorus to provide enough subtle changes throughout without automating a mix down.

Bassline sounds great :)
I was messin around, playing with pan presets, then I found something I liked, and then swapped a sub for a pcm to add a voice sample. Can I do that, use a voice? Rest is all subsynths. Promise :)
You could add the voice to a PCM drum set if you're worried about bending the rules?

It’s OK to use PCM for some vox if you think it’s absolutely necessary, but try to do it without first. If you have your drums in a PCM you could always put your voices in there, otherwise you may have a spare slot in your BB. Be creative and think outside the box.
He he, I didn’t recognize any one of them. That’s one of the really cool things about the sub. You can tweak them beyond recognition with automation and effects. Nice move there.
I'm not using a bb, or drumkit pcm. Trying to go for a groove, sense of rhythm without using a beat. The vox gives a creepy vibe, gonna keep it in :)
It's minimal industrial, kind of like early Dive and Sonar. Hope I can sequence it decently, find some auto. One sub left I havent used yet.
Sounds interesting, you stick with your PCM. I see no big different using it for drums or just to throw in some vox. I’m looking forward to hear the result.
me too :D

Here’s my contribution, a silly song right on the borders of annoying. Well it started as a serious project based on a cool beat, but when one of my presets started to sound humanlike it went in a new direction.
Guess this would fit well in a ‘children channel show’ or maybe a computer game for kids. My own kids are grownup now and don’t appreciate this type of sounds any more, so I would love to hear what your kids think. It was really fun to make this.
And here’s the caustic file.

that was so fun to listen to...love those synthesized vocal souds.
And I quickly finished mine, I'm very impatient. It was fun jammin :)
I used pad01, pad07, perc2, perc3, perc9 from Pan's pack, and the vox off course. 5 subs and 1 pcm.
Minimal Industrial, tribute to Dive ^_^
crazy stuff, very cartoony, love the 80's synth stabs too. Not at all what I would have expected!

Nice dark soundscape there, those little Bing sounds makes a good contrast. Guess the breathy sound is your vox, nice
Very industrial feel, possibly the dirtiest, grungiest tune made with Caustic that I've heard so far. Great creepy vibe and use of repetition.
Really good feel to the mix/production.

Thanks :) maybe I could ve done more. But early Dive is kinda like that.
I should've been working this afternoon :\
The breathing is the voice sample, a vocoder voice.
Caustic file if someone likes to have a look: http://db.tt/XbhVMXml
Thanks for the caustic file, It's always nice to peek in others work. Next to experimenting your self it's the best way to learn IMO.
I was planning on doing a 80’s synthpop at first and kept some of it when the song changed direction.
They came out a little goofy but I liked them. I had some trouble with the frequencies of the bas voice ‘Steve’, he ended up less humanlike than the others (some compromising).
It's a fun way to learn, no doubt about it.

Here's my entry, "Subtractive Force":
Hope you enjoy it!
You're getting some really crisp sounds out of the SS there Mr bojeroo! nice track.
Thank your Mr P! ;o)
Nice work, love the drums, tight and snappy.
You coax some great sounds out of Caustic :D

Thanks! I love the versatility of the subsynth, even using the preset waveforms gives you so many possibilities. This had some new tricks in like overloading the bass and compressing it to get that throbbing effect which I was pleased with.
Nice work everybody.... getting some sharp sounds outta SS there...
Well then, here's my entry. No, it's not a song, but it's subsynth related.
Plus, I don't like making big announcements for little things, I prefer sneaking them into threads like this!
Here's what your next subsynth will look like. Not much is new but what is, is very cool:
New things are:
1- High quality (band-limited) versions of the sawtooth and squarewaves. If you don't know what that means, try selecting a single sawtooth and then pressing the sequential notes from C6 to C7. Notice the weird, ugly tones produced that pollute the note and makes it sound harsh and out of place. That's aliasing and it's caused by using wavetables that aren't band-limited. So the new version will give you the choice between the two wavetable types, at a small extra CPU cost for the HQ version.
2- New modulation modes. The original frequency modulation in the subsynth is technically correct, but it's not what most synths use when they do "FM" (I learned a lot while making the modular!). In reality most synths do phase modulation which gives similar results, but allows for a lot more flexibility and range. For example you'll notice FM doesn't do much if Osc2 is higher pitch than Osc1. PM allows you to get those clanky sounds with higher frequencies. It also lets you get a lot more "growliness" from lower pitch modulation because you can effectively "crank it to 11" without breaking things. I also threw in AM (amplitude modulation) because why not! Oh, and LFO control over the modulation amount too.
3- Unison mode for Osc2 fine tuning. Right now if you pitch Osc2 down a few cents to get some cool phasing between your two Oscs, you're pitching the average tone of the note down too, which means it's hard to use this sound with other synths that ARE tuned correctly. If you select unison mode and move the knob, Osc1 will automatically get tuned the opposite direction from Osc2, giving you that unison sound without affecting overall pitch.
4- Two custom waveforms. You can draw two waveforms and use them in either Osc. There is also a setting to copy waveforms within the editor so that if you want to start from Custom1 and modify it, you can do that. I also ported the little "single cycle importer" utility I wrote a while back so you can import small WAVs directly from the waveform editor.
Nice, I think this will make the subsynth a lot better since the FM is something I really use and the unision feature will be nice.
Mike
That's great Rej! Anything which gives greater flexibility and capability to an already great machine gets my vote!
This is nice and tight. I really like the stereo (paning) effect in the beginning and the LFO automation in the end. Overall a good song with nice sounds on subsynth. Well done, two
for this
Ahh, look at that beauty. This machine gonna kick some ass for sure. All these new features are adding to the flexibility of an already flexible machine, two user defined waveforms, ability to copy waveforms directly from samples, AM Modulation. For those who don’t know, AM Modulation goes by another name (Ring Modulation) or at least a variant of it. Now we only need the ability to hear our waveforms as we draw them (if possible). When I get my hands on this machine…
Thanks for the sneak peek Rej.
Thats really cool Rej..... That is a huge boost to an already great Synth#
The stereo effect is two identical subsynths panned left and right with slightly different phaser settings and independently automated filter cutoff and res. Gives a nice effect but does use up two machines.
so awsome Rej, great updates for SS!!, how exciting..., are you going to include additional LFO waveforms such as: random, reverse saw? that would would be so cool.
reverse saw should be possible, but for random ... don't you need smoothing control for it to be useful? How abrupt should the value changes be?
In the modular, I added the random waveform because you can always route the output through a lag processor to smooth it out, but not here.
Random gives kind of an S&H feel for square-shaped waveform.... or offer a rounded version... but I don't know how easy that would be to write in..... Having random feature for LFO, VCA, VCO would be a niiiice addition for sure... same for PCMSynth and future Synths u have in the works..... psssst how about 12 voices.... or Note Priority with the current 8 voice offered (oooh that's another thread sorry)
Oh yeah, Bend needs to turn into Portempto..... I personally hate the Bend feature, makes no sense, I have absolutely no idea how to use it for anything. Portempto knob can "click" On and adjust the Portempto Glide Speed.... as opposed to using Glide Feature in Pattern Editor..... just my quick thought on that, since we kinda sidetracked the thread a little.
i was thinking that you could apply a SH (random) LFO at a faster rate to a bright saw wav to create that sort of sparkling high register sound that you might layer underneath a nice pad..a little reverb a little delay and maybe a phaser and you have a nice shimmering pad.
