There's this effect I've heard in countless tracks, from psychedelic rock to various kinds of EDM.
It's certainly based in a delay, but each successive repeat of the processed sound is louder than the one before it - or the volume stays constant instead of fading - and it also gets more distorted each time.
Here's an example; from about 4:20 to about 5:15, what the guitar is doing.

I can't seem to get this effect using either the master delay or the add-in delay box; how is it done?
Use the add in delay and push foldback to maximum.
Check out mah soundcloud: http://www.soundcloud.com/josh-oelal
and then automate the post of the foldback :)

I didn't understand that at all. Automate what now?
the post of the distortion effect. post is the ouput volume of the effect ;) you wanted it to get louder after all

Foldback is distortion? I thought it was just how much repeat you got from the delay.
Analog delay pedal with the feedback maxed out. The distortion is a function of maximum feedback. I used to have an Electro-Harmonix Deluxe Memory Man that would do that. All analog circuitry. You can emulate it in Caustic but nothing sounds quite like frying analog.

To get more constant levels on your delays use a compressor. That will push down the highest levels to the level you want. I would route the the signal to a modular and mix it with the original machine to taste, this also gives you more eq options for your delay.
Sooo if i catchin' what pan65 is sayin' inna agreement and with all the others not one of them is sayin' the other is wrong. Soo, i guess u wanna machine input on whatever u use for your song. Modulate the distorted foldback with a compressor and delay weather mixer delay or modsynth delay....
sounds like something of a dual sound of stereo not mono channel. I guess u can fake stereo. But why???? I mean if u automate the sound u get the layer of how u can create your own tail length how it rides the song.
Add appreggiator.... u take the song in other directions.
Did some experimenting with the delay "pedal" - at maximum foldback, the sound apparently NEVER stops or diminishes in volume. Need to figure out how to make it stop when I need it to. It also doesn't seem to distort, so I tried feeding the source to a modular synth input and putting that through a filter and/or some kind of envelope modulation - but it seems I don't really know how to work most of these modules. Will experiment further.
If you want to achieve this kind of effect, like the Memory man (good one Anickt, I have one in my guitar rig), you have to put your processing (filter, distortion) inside the feedback loop. The delay FX (pedal) won't allow you to do this. But going modular way, you can use the delay module, send its output back in the signal flow, and inserting filter/dist in the way.
See songfile with a modular preset.
The first delay control the general delay time. the second delay is for ping-pong process.
Knobs adjustments: the 3:1 mixer module output knob control the feedback. Same thing for the distortion module out. You can control/stop the overall delay by automating one of these. Be careful, as it can start in infinite feedback, same thing on analog devices...use it at your own risk ;-)
Tip: you can attach the note velocity from the modular to the filter cutoff, and then control your filter by playing notes at different velocities.
This is a basic template, you can use another filter, add a second distortion stage...

Sounds like i was wrong, yeeeeeeeessssss!!!!!!
I used to have an old tape delay box similar to an echoplex, altering the delay and reverb by changing the distance between the recording and playback heads, used to get some wild sounds, been trying to achieve something similar in Caustic, without too much success, I will have a look at your file skarabee with interest, thanks

I remember these tape delay, I had a Roland delay machine with similar functions. You can't achieve this in Caustic, because of the nature of the delay (it just delay the signal, no pitch involved). And the pitch of an incoming Machine input can't be changed. I have other sort of Modular delays effect here:

oops I kinda misread what josh wrote so I left out some steps ^^ anyway you have your answer now so I don't really have to say anymore right?

@skarabee
Your tape delay preset gets some pretty nice results. I added a filter and saturator to the feedback loop from the original saturator. It gets pretty crazy. Looking forward to using this. Thanks

That's a pretty ace configuration, skarabee! I'm gonna be using this on my current track to add some cool psychedelic effects - maybe record some guitar licks and play them back from the PCMsynth through your modular delay rig.
I notice that if the saturation knob is beyond a certain point (like about four-o-clock) the sound never stops; have to turn the knob back down to make the effect die out. I can fix that with a little automation, I'm sure.
The saturation knob add a little extra level to the signal and that's why the feedback never stops. If you want to saturate more you need to turn down the output level on the satisfaction module.
I made an 8-bar pattern for the Modular, set the note trigger in the first bar, and then pattern-automate the saturation level to rise or fall as needed. I've made two such patterns so far with different saturation curves; I'll make a few more.
As said before, I'll record a few short guitar licks and put them in the PCM; then trigger them with these automated Modular patterns. This is gonna make my track really pop.
Anickt, I'm still new at this. Might you put up your variation on skarabee's preset with the extra filter and saturator?
Yes I'll upload it as soon as I get a chance. Extended Thanksgiving celebration tonight.

In case the file upload doesn't work (it's not for me) here's a Dropbox link. Just do Download>Direct Download and you should get an Open In page.

happy to see that one of my trick working for you guys! hope to hear the result. I can't really work on music these days, because of a broken shoulder. So I have time to listen to other's tracks.
what happened skara? ^^

Anickt, your file won't open in my Caustic. Trying to do so from within Caustic just reverts back to whatever song was currently loaded.
I tried from my Android file explorer to open in Caustic, and I get the message that my Caustic is out of date and I need to upgrade. You made this in a beta, didn't you? If so I can't open it until Rej pulls the trigger on an official update.
stePH - yes I made it in beta. I haven't run into any major issues so I forget that it is still beta.
anickt
I re-did it in OSX Caustic 3.1. Try this. It's mostly getting some cool feedback effects. Not really more delay.

If the song isn't loading, the file is either corrupted or the download didn't finish properly.
VIOLENT NEUROSIS (YouTube) ...https://www.youtube.com/user/ViolentNeurosis
Or, as stated before, anickt used a beta version of Caustic and its save files are incompatible with the stable release that I'm using.
@ steph, anickt did do 3.1. version and it is posted herre!!! but i think the taste of the knobs is lil off cause rej did add alot two the knob value two balance more accurate mix quality. but the file is posted in this thread u made.
peace
@derrtiblu
You're right. The last one I uploaded I did in 3.1. Yes, the knobs are to be played with. I just left them wherever I had them when I saved the song.
anickt
@StePH Chill, that wasn't necessary... I mention data corruption because I've gone through a few snags where data wasn't completely or properly transferred when I was moving projects to a backup drive, and the way the song-loading issue is described above sounds similar to that type of thing.
VIOLENT NEUROSIS (YouTube) ...https://www.youtube.com/user/ViolentNeurosis
I haven't tried the 3.1 upload yet. But my track is up and it uses some guitar samples passed through skarabee's setup. Look for "The Only Way to Fly" in Show & Tell; the effect is used in the last 3-1/2 minutes.
