Compression Example

I would love it if someone who is good with compression in caustic could post a project file for me that uses a lot of compression. I want to see how it is used so I can compare by turning it on and off.  I want to learn more about how and when to use it. Thank you for your time.

I'd like to understand it

I'd like to understand it better, too!  However, I'd say that what you want to do, you can do now.  Set up a pattern with any instrument or beatbox.  Put the compressor into fx slot and start looping.  Leave controls at default and start playing with just one control at a time while you listen and when you get some noticeable effect power the compressor on and off to see the difference.  This isn't a substitute for a book-learning approach but you will get a lot better feel for what happens when you do something to a setting.

Leave sidechaining aside at first but later you can do same experiment with that using two patterns running, one as sound, one as trigger.  Can experiment with attack and release a lot and then solo your sound to hear compression working without trigger sound.

If the pros here are laughing at me, that's OK :-)  I have learned almost everything in life by the seatofmypants so it comes natural.

Its not extensive enuff of detail what all i should be hearing listening for win i compress.

as prof.jason does explain inna another thread another video of the knobs of multi filter. But i think he explains it with compression too.

i know u looking for detail explaination of what should visual example of compression look like i will promote my thread at the bottom of this link cause it is multiple videos sayin' the same with different audio trks in production. I don't think u can go wrong.

The best thing to do is to follow JHSound advice. All compressors have a different behaviors, if you want to really hear what the Caustic's one does, make some experiments, It's difficult to give values, because all depend of the nature of the sound, and the effect you want to achieve: add more punch, block some unwanted peaks, maximize level, erase dynamics...

One trick with percussive sounds: start with ratio set to maximum, and play with threshold and attack to find the sweet spots. (treshold first, and then attack)  Then you can reduce the ratio and adjust the release.

Mek's metaphor, is actually a great way of describing the concept behind compression, I know that I had been struggling a little with this, I reckon if you keep this in mind, and then as JH and skarabee say, just experiment, that would be the best way to hear what it does in a test manner

Thank you for your help. I have tried looping a single as well as multiple insturments and hearing the effects as I alter the compressor.  I can definetely tell the effect most of the time.  There are some sounds however that just seem harder to hear what the hell is going on.  Story of our life, right?

Another idea is watch the

Another idea is watch the level meters and such to see what they do with compression on or off. Sometimes that visual aid can help you dial in your ears and pinpoint where things kick in. This is also a useful habit when trying to control things from redlining too much. 

Also try not only soloing instruments but in the drumbox you can go even deeper and solo each drum sound. That can help if you've got some complicated layered drum stuff going on.
