Caustic Song file (optional):
Thinking about it the other day, Trap and Black Metal doesn't seem like the oddest combination. To test it, I made a parody of En Vind Av Sorg - Darkthrone (or atleast the two main riffs), which, in my opinion, turned out decent and doesn't sound that forced. This brings up the topic of Blackened Trap: Black Metal's melodies/progressions and atmospheres combined with Trap's percussion and 808 bass. What are your thoughts about it? I'm working on an original track based on the combination, I'll post when finished. Edit: As the Spanish say: voilà. Just the first 64 bars, it's not as guitar-centric as the last one, but it's still based on some BM riffs I wrote a while back. Edit: Here's the full track. Criticism/suggestions needed, I need to finish it soon. I'm aware the lead needs work.
That actually goes together really well. I can imagine some more heavy metal riffs fitting good too. This seems like a fun rabbit hole to go down, interested to see how far you take it.
sounds great, like more intense witchhouse/salem/ blvck ceiling stuff, havent really heard many new arttists in the genre its a shame too, alot of great bands stopped making music as of late, but i dont really think the genre was done justice, kinda folded too early, as fads seem to kill alot of interesting music genres, unfortunately, but i hear alot of great music in this forum, especially the trap beats, they really sound on par with the studio tracks.
I still don't know what it is that marks "trap" as a genre.
But then, most of the differentiations between EDM genres are lost on me.
there's so many subgenres lol, usually the trap beats with the heavy hoover bass and beats they played in the clubs when i lived in denver around 2010ish was always labeled as witchhouse, or darkwave, id have to agree on the differentiations now, that i dont keep track as much, and stay out of the nightlife.
For my biased unknowledges view, trap = 808 and rap... And some annoying bell tickles
I make creative EDM utilising Caustic and many other Daws. See for yourself on my SoundCloud, you may like it :) https://soundcloud.com/xandyaudio thanks!
I know that I'm most partial to what's called psybient or psychill, and after that, progressive psytrance. Basically anything with a "psy" prefix.
Maybe I'll found the "Psy-Corps" if it's not already in existence (and if it is, I'll join).
There's Trap, the Hip-Hop genre, and EDM Trap (Trapstep, etcetera). Trap is usually defined by arps (short decay, "plucky" instruments), orchestral instrumentation, such as string and brass sections, repetetive structure and minor scale/dissonant motifs; EDM Trap is more diverse, but in my experience, it usually have decent builds that lead into main sections with extremely annoying leads and over sampling (believe it or not I like the genre). Either way, it's mostly defined by it's drums: 808-style samples playing a half-time beat with fast hi-hat patterns. You'll usually hear two kicks: a "hit" or one with short decay that mostly deals in mid to high frequencies, and the almighty 808 kick, famous for it's long decay and sub-bass range.
Excuse the rambling, high school isn't the most interesting thing out there.

Don't Grow Up, It's a Trap!
I found this mix searching Rhyme Asylum; their track "Smoke Screens & Pipe Dreams" appears in this mix starting at 7:20
I'm fairly certain darkwave and trap are very very different :D
What's a genre?

I think that some of the genre talk is nomenclature used by musicians to describe sounds and issues to other musicians.
I don´t understand much of it, and even less of the different sub genres. Believe me, I have googled and listened very much in order to expand my knowledge to electronic music.
But hey, I´m cool with that.

I was kinda touching on that when I asked what a genre was, which of course, I know. But it was my way of dancing around the imposed limitation of genres. Personally, I find it a bit challenging to not just sort of play around and end up in some other direction mid-song. As far as listening to music and identifying the subgenres of genres, I'm horrible. I prefer metal, unless I'm going through a dubstep phase. I couldn't really tell you what the differences between extreme metal and black metal, for example. Or drumstep vs dubstep. Or drumstep vs dnb. I hate the labels, because the concept is confining, and the actual differences sometimes are incredibly subtle.

All the dubs and steps and traps are like branches on a tree (on speed), something new every day. Who can even count them?
It would be fun tho´, to take a song I like and decide what kind of step-trap-dub-genre it is.

SCIENCE/MUSIC JOKE:
BIOLOGY TEACHER: "Who can tell me the difference between venom and poison?"
STUDENT: "Venom is black metal, and Poison is glam metal."
I don't know anything about Trap, Dubstep, Witchouse or Darkwave but I do know that 'Voila' is a French word not a Spanish one.......;-)
I don't even know wtf is darkwave...

TheZEROProject, I know you didn't ask, but I spend too much time on Wikipedia, so
Extreme Metal is an umbrella term, including Black Metal, Death, Thrash, Doom, and all fusions and sub genres (there are way too many to list off). So, it doesn't describe a specific sound.
Black Metal is an offshoot of Thrash that more or less focuses on tremolo picked guitar melodies in a minor or chromatic scale, blast beats, screamed vocals, and an eerie atmosphere. There are lots of variations, so it's hard to get any more specific.

I don't believe in Genres
But I love the track Sonus' posted here.
Sonus, there is nothing wrong with spending too much time on Wikipedia, in my opinion. :)

I'm familiar with that Darkthrone track, not a massive fan of that band but i bought the album this is on back in the day. I like your version but its virtually unrecognisable from the original. I guess that was probably the idea but I'd never have guessed this was En Vind Av Sorg.
