Yep the modular is great for kicks. Trance kicks, acoustic kics, 808. I craft all my kicks from.it as well.

i always use pcm waveform editor with begin sound 808 kickdrum from the beatbox, 909 will also do, but its better for hardCORE kicks.
here in this track in the soundcloud embed thingy, you'll here different kicks, pitched and stuff, these are all made from an 909 kickdrum heavily edited with PCM waveform editor (just put effect after effect on the waveform)
you need 3.2b4 btw to do the waveform editing :)
Playing with modular is fun but its not good for me but I am near to make really good bassdrum ;-) maybe... Some help is welcome
