The last two months I have been interested in using samples from music from the 50s & 60s. I've had some success with some tracks. But recently when I find a song (right now I'm trying to sample Maurice William's and the zodiacs - stay) and I slice it up into samples I would like to use. I cant seem to sync up my drums to the samples drums. And some of the songs i use, I can only find mono versions, so i just cant mono one side like i have done to stereo versions. When I'm slicing I try to focus on the vocal and the drum beat. I try to slice them right before a kick. But it seems to always be off slightly. So i am wondering if anyone has some advice on placing drums over existing drums in songs.
Working drums into old song samples
Not sure if it will help you, but I typically figure out a song's tempo; then load the song up in Audacity alongside a click track, and use the click track as my guide for slicing samples.
I'm not hearing much drums in the original here, so it doesn't seem to be interfering with your added drum track. Or is this not one of the tracks you were having issues with?
I just adjust the tempo of the song to fit the tempo of the sample. I come across this problem quite often

I always make sure I am matching the original songs bpm and I timestretch the whole track if necessary. And i do not have a pc so I cannot use Audacity. And the track I put on here is not the track I am referring to. It's just one i was able to work with the original drums.
I hear it. It's a very slightly off, but I like it because it gives the track character and depth. When you first released this I didn't even notice

Try shortening the sample. Sometimes because caustic doesn't use decimals I have to shorten the sample or adjust the songs tempo

Let's hear or see the track to which you're referring

Perhaps adjusting the start point of the music phrase samples may help sync up with your drumline... (you can turn off the quantization (I can't remember if Rej's clock has a resolution of 96 or 128) and fine tune your sample(s) placement in the Sequencer or Pattern for each phrase.
The song I'm trying to put a beat over is Maurice William's and the zodiacs - stay.

I just checked it runs at 122

Right and I stretched it to 120 already. And I have done what your suggesting Jason. Thanks yall for the advice I'll just keep working at it until I get it down.
This song doesn't stay in tempo. There's tiny fluctuations in the original. I tried slowing it down but nothing

That is pretty close to what I have at the moment. I guess its that tiny bit of offbeat that is bothering me. And I have found this problem on some other old songs that I have tried to use. Thanks for trying to help.
Here's a hair better. My suggestion is to get a live drummer to follow the tempo

Well, yeah... if the original song wasn't recorded to a click track, the tempo might wander a little. Even the very best don't usually play with metronomic precision. That's part of the charm of old records.
At 160 it works
