Thanx Jason and Dirty Blues..

Thanx Jason and Dirty Blues..
I updated the song, with a dry, non-distorded guitar theme, before pressing the distortion switch.. Thats not truly important, though.. Except for me..
At least i learned or verified, that on/off effect switch was automatable....

I had the underrated Yamaha

I had the underrated Yamaha DX9 for years, and i loved it..
Rej's FMsynth is nearly as good on some points, and much better on other points..
I also have a Yamaha TX81z..
FM has the reputation of being a difficult synthesis.. For me, that's not true.. But the hidden menus of the DX series made it quite obscure for many people.. (not talking of the TX81z which is a real pain to program..)
A better, more intuitive, interface would have given birth to a better reputation.. Rejs interface is much easier to use..

OK, now you've encouraged me

OK, now you've encouraged me to try again, to figure out how the FM actually works.  I've used presets but found the explanation of how it works to be confusing.  I liked all three sounds and the track itself is good, too.

Thanx Wardini.. Thanx JHS..

Thanx Wardini.. Thanx JHS.. And thanx Uncle.. Your comments are appreciated..

I worked on it (Drum patterns, piano line, and more guitar effects.. And my beloved Mellotron sound on PCM synth) (plus kinds of pitch bend on the guitar, using and automated LFO depth) ..

Finished it yesterday evening, and gave the last touch today..

I called it "Bleu Sale", which means "Dirty Blue"..

It's now on my soundcloud..

And the updated caustic file is added to this post..

Thanx my dear Uncle..

Thanx my dear Uncle..

A day in February, I  was searching for an android virtual Mellotron.. Instead, I found Caustic.. I tried it.. And for sure, my first thing was to download Mellotron samples.. But I didn't know yet that Caustic was such a powerful tool, and would give me much more options than just a Mellotron in my pocket..

This Mellotron PCM file is slightly detuned, that's what makes it even more credible.. I truly like that sound..

That Mellotron sounds like it

That Mellotron sounds like it was sampled from an old b&w film.

It seems its been sampled

It seems its been sampled from an old Mellotron, with old tapes. Oxydation, loss of magnetism, irregular speed.. Maybe

But when you listen to King Crimson in the 1970, or to Led Zepp "Rain Song", you get the similar "dirty old sound" feeling..

Yeah I like it. You had me digging through my soundfonts looking for more, but out of almost 2gigs so far I only found 1 but it's not as good.

Nice shot, Thierry!

Nice shot, Thierry!

I had a DXII and a TX81z (yes the TX81z is a PITA to program)

If you can load VSTs, I have a nice little mellotron, calle Tapeworm, maybe you know it. I also made an .exe with it. Can send you the vst or the exe zipped.

You have some lovely sounds

You have some lovely sounds in your track, great example of that timeframe you've referenced, kind of reminded me a little Misty Mountain Hop from LZ 4, but may more of a Jazz fusion thing, very nice

Thmk you Skarabee, thank you Wellesley..
Ah, Misty Mountain Hop.. I never knew why, exactly, the friends of the policeman would.drop by.. It will always remain ambiguous fore, and that's all the charm of Led Zepp's lyrics, in many of their songs
@skarabee.. Oh !! VST plugins can be turned into standalone.exe.files ?? If yes, sure I.can be interested.. I'll contact you..

About a year and a half ago,

About a year and a half ago, one user here in the forum found a site explaining FM synthesis in plain talk.

Here it is: http://www.dubbhism.com/2010/06/tao-of-fm-synthesis-introduction.html

And the forum thread about it: http://www.singlecellsoftware.com/node/6999

You found it. I was just

You found it. I was just coming here to post a working link. I guess dubbhism.com is dead, and they moved to a different domain.
Anyway, yeah, that's it. There are four or five installments. The bit about "ratio" integers is hard to apply to Rej's FMSynth, since his dials lack numbers, but I guess you just substitute "octave" for "integer" and you're off to the races.

[edit] Six installments on digital FM synthesis, and a couple more on analog if you search "Tao FM". Just reviewed the old thread again.

Sincerely, i have been reading the 4 first pages, and nothing started yet.. It spends a lot of time "turning around the pot" as we say in French.. 4 pages to.just settle a basic point: the simpler the ratio, the simpler the result..
I'll go further,if i find the episode 5.. Hoping that episode 267 might be useful.. But I'm not sure that this kind of article are to able to.teach you anything.. It seems that the author is affraid of being called "intellectual" by calling a cat, a cat..

Bleu sale, it's french...

Bleu sale, it's french... Thierry, it's a french first name. The song is really great, the sounds are very nice, thanks. I have some mellotron presets for the pcm synth too. I love all these bands of the seventies, Genesis, Yes, King Crimson and so on... They have used the Mellotron a lot...

Merci Monsieur Quenin..

Merci Monsieur Quenin..
Da.. Genesis, King Crimson were regularly using that wonderful tape player.. And so did a less famous band called Greenslade.. But let's not forget the Moody Blues "Nights in White Satin".. Or the Beatles..
And even more. Led Zepp's wonderful Rain Song..
For me, the Mellotron sounds "so British".. Not only because many British pop-rock bands used it right from the beginning but also the sound itself is so close to Peter Rabbit, Peter Pan, to the hobbits village, to the fog on the Thames or on the Avon..
In France, we didn't have the chance to have such excellent prog-rock bands.. H can only name Ange.. But not far from our boundary, there was in Switzerland, a very good one called Pulsar, who had a rather famous record.. The Strands of the Future..

And no, I'm not Italian.. Even not at the boundary.. I'm from the north west of France.. On the same river as Paris, but 160km closer to the sea..

Somewhat off topic, Bi Kyo

Somewhat off topic, Bi Kyo Ran is a Japanese prog band that used lots of Mellotron. In fact, they started in 1976 as Madoromu and were a King Crimson cover band.

Means that you're younger than me, skarabee.. The Ange that I know is Sur la Trace des Fées, or Par les Fils de Mandrin..

The same here, I am a huge

The same here, I am a huge Ange fan, and I'm still looking for samples of the legendary magic, strange and surnatural Ange "mellotron" sound of the first albums. They made it with a Viscount organ passed throught a Hammond Reverb...

They came to the real Mellotron with the Guet-apens album.

"Exode" or "Fils de lumière"

"Exode" or "Fils de lumière" come to my mind... It doesn't sound as a reverberated organ but rather as a special kind of Mellotron...

I just listened to those 2

I just listened to those 2 Angelic songs.. Yes, "Fils de Lumière".. Sure,  this sound is not exactly similar to a mellotron sound, but not terribly different as well.. We would not mistake one for the other, but they are in the same spirit..
