Compressor Advice

I can get the compressor to do too much or too little. Struggling to get it to enhance a tune. Currently experimenting with it who the one drum machine and a low bassline. Compressor on pcm synth, set to feed from drum track.

Hi there!   The Compressor is

Hi there!   The Compressor is a VERY handy tool to make your tracks really come alive in many ways.  In the Caustic App, I have found that once you get the "feel" for it, it becomes very easy to set up and use.

One way that I set it up, is to tweak extreme settings so you can hear major pumping effects...... the first Knob to set is the Release knob.... play around with the Release so that the pumping effect starts to sound more rhythmic to your tempo and crunch effect on your track.

Next adjust your Attack setting so you get the punchy effect more to your taste...

Then Back off your Ratio (perhaps approx 2:00 position as a default)  and then back off your Threshold knob until the excess pumping effect fades away until it sounds pleasing to your ear.

SideChaining for ducking effects..... if your BeatBox (lets say machine 2) wants to create a ducking effect in PCMSynth (machine 1)  setup a Compressor in the PCMSynth IFX..... click the little box until the the number value reaches your BeatBox-- in this case #2.... then repeat the process I listed above, until the dsired effect is achieved.

Also!  I discovered a cool distortion type effect with the Compressor, if you set all extreme settings on all knobs  (Threshold knob= lowest, Ratio = highest, Attack=fastest, Release=fastest)   I use this alot for some cool gritty distortion type effects.

An example of various uses of the Compressor can be found -  - - --HERE-- -  -   -  this demo content pack from Frankie999 includes a Song File that shows the Compressor in use as well as SideChain effects that you asked about...

Also ---- Here's another example of SideChaining Compressor techniques that I used also ---

And apologies for the rubbish

And apologies for the rubbish grammar in my initial post. Touch screen keyboards still frustrate me.

I'll see what I can do about

I'll see what I can do about that..... I do need to get back and make some new YouTube videos and seriously update my site as well, featuring the 2.1.2 Caustic updates and new content that I'm working hard on right now, as well as start to break down how to set up Songs, Effects, and using my Builderz concepts for your Caustic tracks....  some of my videos show Caustic in action, and you will see my Compressor settings for the different types of genres that I can make with the App.

I'm about to embark on my next pack Builderz DDDubStep.... it's in the experimental stage right now, but I'll post a Song File that will have some Compressor settings that you can tweak and learn as well.

Weird, when I solo the bass synth I can't see all the notes in the piano scroll. Nice tune btw. Wobbly dubstep fun: )

That's because if you explore

That's because if you explore the sounds on the PCMSynth keyboard, I have glide up and glide down sounds in the lowest and upper octaves....  Scroll up and down, you will find them all.....  this is Builderz Style, but I'm considering the most efficient way to put these elements together to make it easy to create your patterns.... thus this experimental stage before I finish putting  this pack together for release.

I'm really interested in this

I'm really interested in this soooo called "ducking effect" not my first time hearing of it. But i never focused on remembering quite what it is really how two really get it. If i'm using the pcm am i sampling my idea in the pcm? Making the effect thru a mono pcm??? I don't get how this can be helpful.

Ducking is simply volume

Ducking is simply volume modulation.  It can be triggered by side chaining in a compressor, or you can manually lower the volume of one sound to make room for another sound that would otherwise occupy the same frequency range.  Its a great way to clean muddiness from a mix by preventing phasing between 2 conflicting sounds.  You also dont need a compressor for this, you could automate the volume of a machine or mixer gain control to get the same effect, but using a compressor to trigger the modulation is much, much easier as its automatic.  I think Rej touches a little bit on this in the video that covers the compressor.

When you're listening to the

When you're listening to the radio and the DJ starts talking, the music gets quieter. The DJ stops talking, the music gets louder again. That's ducking.

Bingo......

Bingo...... You could try it here..... Side chain your vocal track to something, maybe heavy active bass or drums channel and set the Release Time to the max......
