Caustic promo app album project

As discuted here http://www.singlecellsoftware.com/node/1646, an emerging project bout making an app for sharing Caustic tracks as MP3 and Caustic files is in the air. Depending of the number of submited tracks, we could decide wich way to go: included files or download links.

If you want to give a track for free, please add it here (both Soundcloud and Causticfile link)

I submit this track:

Hmmm this sounds familiar   LOL, I always enjoy listening to this one... your choice of sounds and FX blend very well and provide a unique mood, I envision being at the beach at a cool night with hanging lights and a hint of fog rolling in...  oh yeah I caught that automated delay rate change in the end.... I've done that trick before...

Nice as always

Nice choice Skarabee, that

Nice choice Skarabee, that song have become a classic Caustic track.

Ok, here’s my contribute. It’s not a classic Pan65 based on subsynth but I like this one. It uses all four available machines so it demonstrates caustic in a good way I think. This one is called Ishtar (The Babylonian goddess of fertility).

The Caustic file

And the Mp3

hopefully this is okay to post - it uses an 808 PCM sample that I DL'd from this site - the rest is just three basslines.

Added .wav version of the file. The 808 PCM preset is from Big Beard and is available on this site in the PCM Presets section.

When you're considering a

When you're considering a track for distribution, make sure it doesn't contain any commercial samples and that you have permission to distribute anything you didn't create yourself.

I'd be pretty pissed if all my apps got taken down because of a DMCA violation on a demo/content pack.

Anything downloaded from here should be ok, but be smart about it please.

I would also suggest that

I would also suggest that tracks should not contain offensive lyrics or words in the title.

Also, I think tracks should not have been post produced in anyway outside of caustic.

Too much paranoia about stuff

Too much paranoia about stuff like that unless you are using something very obvious and it is apparent in a submitted Caustic Song file....

Other than that, relax and make music.

It's not about paranoia J, I

It's not about paranoia J, I think you misunderstand my point. It's about showcasing what Caustic can do. If the mp3s are there to encourage people who haven't tried caustic yet, then they should be showing what mastering you can do in Caustic itself, by itself. Not everyone has a desktop or laptop they can use to post produce, so they should be able to hear what's possible just using their mobile device or tablet imo.

I think J was refering to my point about copyrighted material.

It's not only about fear of being taken down, it's also about respect for those who make packs. I can't exactly side-step them by giving away half their stuff.

I often use samples from rhythm-lab, vermona drumkit and clicks and virus pads and such, they say they're cleared, and sounds from Jason's packs, so I don't know... maybe I better not send in something?

I guess the issue is that if

I guess the issue is that if you share the caustic file as well as the mp3 then people can grab presets for free from your caustic file. So, you may have the right to use them commercially as you've paid for royalty free samples but you don't have the right to distribute those same samples to other people,.

Seems a shame not to contribute though, dude.

Rej has said that any presets uploaded to this site are likely fair game and surely there's a fair chance that you'll have some tunes where it simply isn't an issue anyway.

maybe you could include some

maybe you could include some caustic files, just the ones that are only using royalty-free sounds...everyone else can just submit their mp3...the problem is how will you police the caustic file submissions?  who is going to sort through every sample and preset to make sure they are clean?...peronally i use free samples off the internet quite often, i have no way to actually varify they royalty-free...i assume most are ( as advertised)...and i often might take a preset and tweek it to suit my needs..or..whats to stop me from just renaming the preset, keeping most if not all of the copyrighted materials intact? ....sounds like a legal hornets nest to me...i suppose it might be just as problematic to go after violators...but why take the chance?

Those clicks and drumkits are in almost everything, not in Parametric Exploration, but that was just a quick jam checking out the new BL and PEQ.

I'd try and look for a compromise - you're talented, you're one of the main contributors on this forum, and as such you should be represented.

Rej has his reputation to think about so I can understand his caution but we want to be showcasing the very best that Caustic can do.

Maybe Good Intentions, only

Maybe Good Intentions, only uses the christmas challenge presets from J and the caustic 808 for drumkit, has some nice automation. Need to check first if the caustic file is okay. Does it have to be mp3? Is wav also okay?

mp3 will be the default I

mp3 will be the default I think, I use the Realplayer converter to convert the .wav file to mp3 to upload on Soundcloud.

BUT I'm sure someone else can convert the .wav to mp3 if needed, I'm not sure who's going to build the 'app'.

Question for Rej - when the

Question for Rej - when the hypothetical album is imported as .caustic files will it create a sub folder in the Caustic song directory?

Ideally, it would be great if a folder was created, 'Caustic Warriors Vol 1' wink And all the song files were then in that folder.

Yes, it would create a subdir

Yes, it would create a subdir.

To be clear, "royalty-free" never implies you can re-distribute it. It means you can use it in your final material (the mixed down audio track) without paying royalties for each play/use.

This whole thing is a grey area.... "Amen breaks", need I say more...

To avoid enter in this grey

To avoid enter in this grey area, maybe we could simply forget about the causticfiles for the first release, and put only audiofiles. This will permit some users to use and demo paid soundpacks, and  could eventually be mentionned in the app.

I agree with Bojeroo concerning the post-prod. I first proposed some mastering options, but this could deserve the project. All must be done in Caustic.

For the audio format, I can collect the wav files and convert them in Wavelab. Just have to know the ratio to use. I think 320Kbps or 256 kbps will be fine to preserve quality. 192 kbps should be the lowest.

I agreed that publishing MP3

I agreed that publishing MP3’s only is the best option here. We could always promote the community at the same time, if someone wants .caustic files he/she can find them here.

I usually stick with 256Kbps to keep the file size down but if the song got lots of high frequency content I might consider 320Kbps.

For this first album I think it’s best to allow Caustic only (no post production), but later on we have to widen up so people like Rachel can post songs with vocals or guitar etc

It'd be nice to have a second

It'd be nice to have a second community pack. Wanted to pick Eerie first, that's my favorite (with and without vocal), or Reminiscence, because people seemed to like that one, but I'll just Good Intent, also okay I guess, and Jason probably won't sue me or Rej... I hope ;p

I'll upload the wav and caustic file later, thanks in advance for conversion Skarabee :)

(needed to edit this post, because my crappy ipad was malfunctioning again :( why do people like these apple devices anyway, I get constant errors, more than I get with android :(( disappointing experience this ipad, sorry for the rant ;)

... or ... Distant Memory... let me know which one?

Or anything else I've done!

I think keeping the CAUSTIC files out is the right thing to do, I've got a few bits of commercial content in mine which I doubt would be wanted to be widely distributed for nothing.
