Ok so I got the full version of caustic and Im hoping to create some unique music for an animation im working on but I dont know where to start! :/ The app is kinda confusing to use and theres A LOT of options and im new to this so I dont know what anything does. Ive found youtube vids that explain somestuff but theyre not that good. Does anyone know any good tutorials out there that might help me?
Ps: My goal is making battle music and something thats upbeat.
Hey man.
The official tutorials provided by the app are great (The ones that link you to YouTube videos). They taught me all I know about production and are short and sweet.
My advice is to learn how to use at least 1 synth from the tutorials, beatbox, and the pcm synth.
The easiest synth to learn in my opinion is the sub synth.
Just follow the tutorial on the sub synth (because it does teach the basics of synthesis quickly and effectively.). And just play around with the sub synth until you understand what the knobs do. If you forget just watch the video again and you'll remember.
Learn the difference between pattern mode and song mode.
Pattern mode is used to create the notes of each individual pattern. You can also automate stuff in pattern mode. But it's most helpful for figuring out the song structure. You use this mode to create the music. If you see the word 'pattern' or 'song' you can tap it and it will change to the other one. (So, if you tap on pattern it will toggle to song.)
Song mode is used to place down your patterns. You can use automation to change stuff but this time it's not limited the individual pattern.
Beyond that, learn automation (It's not as hard as you think. A good example of automation is how those base wobbles are done in dubstep. All it is, is automating the cut-off frequency to change at different times. Automation can be done with most knobs (such as volume, delay reverb, etc).
Good luck and let me know if you have any questions. :)
ALSO if you're making battle music for, say, an rpg depending on the setting, you might prefer to use the pcm synth because it uses samples of real wav files. So you can find some decent realistic sounding stuff and if they arent up to your standards, you can import your own.
Ah screw it. I'll give you a small explanation on automation. Because the first thing that confused me when I started was the red record button.
That button isn't used to record the sound from your device. It's used to record the knobby things in the software (such as the volume knob, and cut off frequencies).
When pressed, there will be a red border flashing. That's just there to.show you that you're in automation more. Again, it's not recording externally the sounds around your device. It's just tracking the things you do in the app.
I'll explain automation in pattern mode first.
I want you to go to pattern and melody...Or something. XD
Sample in some farts I guess. :P (joking.).
Once you're that, press the record button to enable.automation - make sure you're in pattern mode still.
Then, just tap on any knob on the synth that you want. You will see yellow around the knob.
If it's orange it means you're not in pattern mode. Pattern = yellow. Song = Orange.
So, after that swipe up from the synth on the left side on the film lookin thingy. You will end up in the pattern editor. Press the top.left corner and.play around the with the automation.
You will hear a different of whatever you're playing with as you mess around with that.
Explain this stuff is a lot.harder than I expected it would be.
EDIT: Sorry about bad text. I'm using my phone and tired af.
If its "more the how to do what u want with caustic" then u best watch the tutorials on YouTube two understand the app.
But if your confusion is not dat at all. Then the creative start..... Best idea.
Is gettin' people two submit u ideas two get u started and going in a direction. Of any direction!! Is better than no direction.

As there's no simple answer to How do I make Great drawings ? there's no simple answer to music either.
As there are approaches, tools, and styles, and techniques.. and so much more ... to what makes great art.
From my personal point of view, the most importantly is to understand how music translates to time and structure.
So I would recommend to start by making very simple rhythms in Beat Box , so you would understand how is everything elegantly divided into ( mostly into counts of 4 ) - - - once you have a simple beat in going on , you can bring out other instruments and learn by adding other sounds and structures into it. After this , there are too many ways where to leap from here .. so you'd have to find a way that works best for you. It's all about having realistic goals, not too high aspirations, and dedicating some time.
