Why do I always feel that my inspiration is like someone else's song?

Why do I always feel that my inspiration is like someone else's song?

I usually have a lot of inspiration, but when I am proud, I often feel that this is not my song. Why do I feel this way?sad

Well I've written a bunch of tracks that I think sound like other people's songs, likewise other people have said sound some of my tracks like something else.

The long and short of it is if you are consciously plagiarising someone else's work then maybe don't release it and use it as a learning tool, if however you've written a track that you can genuinely say is your work then release it, and if someone makes a comparison later then so be it, and decide what to do with it then.

Warning: pretentious

Warning: pretentious
Every piece of art is inspired by and takes ideas from a hundred other things. The ideas a musician has about structure, harmony, melody, rhythm, form, genre, all these are informed by every song that musician has ever heard, and all those songs were informed by every song those artists heard. Even the tools we use are the result of millennia of experimentation and improvement by billions of people. If you managed to scrub every ounce of influence from your music: no synthesizers, no drums, no harmony, no 12 tone equal temperament, the resulting music still wouldn't be only you because other people's music is part of you.

People sometimes talk about music like artists are lone entrepreneurs in competition with each other to sell the best product, but that's a lie. Music is, and always has been, one big collaboration with everybody shuffling together everybody else's ideas. It's a form of communication more than anything.

Idk, I get frustrated with how people talk about music. Like sure, don't copy someone else's work to make a quick buck, because that won't make you happy. Copy someone else's work because you LOVE their work.

I make Chillout Electronic Music, and sometimes Ambient. http://floatingbeyond.tk
