Gah!

I don't know what's happened to me, all I seem to be able to make these days is pretty music that helps you drift off to sleep... Nothing particularly wrong with it but I feel I've lost my edge!!

Carry on!

Hahaha, start writing some melody using only BassLine. I don't think you can write anything "pretty" or "drowsy" with BassLine. Add Distortion fx before you even start composing, so that you will be in the right frame of mind..... Carry on!

Now skarabee is getting philosophical ... asking the question, "what is the edge?"

So I've purposefully tried to write some more edgey stuff in an attempt to get my mojo back... Thoughts on the below please! Which (if any) one or ones should I try to turn into full tracks?

I hear you Rob. It’s not easy

I hear you Rob. It’s not easy to get out of writers block and I believe what works for one chap doesn’t necessarily work for another. But I think forcing it is the last thing you want to do. Here’s some things you may try out to get your mojo back.

  1. Take a time out for as long as it takes. This doesn’t work for me, I need to create something or I go bonkers.
  2. Get out of your comfort zone, like you already do with those pretty songs that makes you fall asleep smiley.
  3. Pick up another artform like painting, photo, ceramics or something. Even if its not music you still keep your creative juices flowing.
  4. Pick up a new instrument to play.
  5. Make covers of songs you like. You may even try to improve them. I promise you pick up new techniques along the way that may trigger new ideas to try out.

About your songs… I think the last one (Race) have potential, I really like those chiptune elements in there.

About Edge… Have you looked behind the Joshua Tree?

OK, you asked for input.  All three are great starts but I think Late Night has the most potential for development.  It has a good hook and is ready to grow into something.bigger.. My two cents...

I Would have to agree with A

I Would have to agree with A couple statemenets of people saying to continue the third and first tracks. Like, they sound good already, try to continue ^^

Also Here is my list of advice for getting "Edge"back.

  1. (As mentioned before) Try to get out of your comfort zone, like I got some advice from my sister about how changing up the routine helps writters, and I do believe that works for composers/musicians as well. Go out for a lentghy walk in the morning (if you can), seeing new things means new experiences and that boils down to new ideas. ^^
  2. Find/explore new music. Go for J-core, rock, metal, ANYTHING, stumble down to Youtubes erlier uploads,I can guarantee that You'll find new interesting music somewhere ^^ That should get the inspiration flowing. (it works for me), I would reccomend "Kidkanevil - My Little Ghost [Album]", its one of those things, where you go in blind not knowing what to expect.
  3. Collaborate... I do this wayy to much : 3 Its just amazing what merging of ideas can do (Cough Cough Unofficial Caustic Discord Cough.
  4. Try to refine (change up your) workflow, Start synthesizing everything if you want to experiment (do it with drums especially), as mentioned try covering songs, make a track thats focused on setting the listener into a certain area, like a calm forest or anything actually.

For me idealy art in general is the portreyal of emotion. I love discovering music that reflects my own feelings ,sadness, happyness and anything else thats on my mind. So when making music (mostly obscure stuff) I try to put in the emotions that I felt thru-out the week, thats when those new experiences come in and help ^^

There are a couple of experiments you can go for to make it more Interesting.

  • Make music reflecting a certain Colour. Like for example I can pick White, when I do I'll try to look at the feeling I get and what I asociate with it, then you can try transfering that cetain mood into your sound design, Melody, song structure, and mixing even.
  • Make music reflecting a certain place or even time.

Anyways hope at least a couple of these will help ^^

Trite, I know, but in my own

Trite, I know, but in my own experience edge partially comes from circumstance. Your life is reflected in your music. Problem is, adding true "edge" to your life is often not a good experience. I guess that depends on how you define it, for me it's been things like addiction, relationship problems, being put into situations where you feel somewhat controlled or powerless, loss of close friends and family, losing almost everything due to bizarre and frustrating circumstances and having to start again... pretty common stuff.

If you've had issues in the past maybe you can meditate on those times, get angry or sad, or motivated in a "fuck you" kinda way, whatever works. Or perhaps just create an imaginary situation. Find a story or make one up, use that as a theme. Ask yourself what it is you want to say.

I find imposed limitations help as opposed to just waiting for inspiration to hit. You just decide you're gonna write a song about wrestling alligators or playing dodgeball with meteors and go from there.

Again, this can still involve (probably has to) some level of discomfort, kinda reminds me of how actors who pull off amazing edgey roles end up telling that it put them in a dark place for a while. As they say, YMMV.

Thanks, I love a bit of detail too, there's about 4 tracks in the mix which simply just do the odd growl, blip or swell. It always feels more complete when you just stick a bit of detail in there.

I like your racing song. What

I like your racing song. What else could you name it but that?

I had writers block not too long ago, and it came after a burst of starting and finishing many projects in quick succession, so almost maybe like I burnt out and had to wait to recharge. compared to then, I still feel like im not fully unblocked, but it's better than a couple weeks ago.

These people are right, taking a break and or getting out of your comfort zone are things that can be both the cause and effect of your writers block. As long as you stick with the music and your passion doesnt die out, then you will soon be unblocked if you arent already. it seems like you love the music making, and music in general, and for people who truely love it and have a passion for it, writers block perhaps is just natures way of giving us time to recharge. maybe we only have so much creative fuel and if we burn through it we have to generate more. People who love this stuff couldnt make writers block last even if they wanted to. The gust will come back with...gust!

Or as someone else said, whats wrong with making music that's pretty and good to sleep to? You know how much people spend on sleep medication, or how much it costs to get someone you know to knock you out with a hammer? There could be money in sleepy songs. Sleep is for our benefit, I dont know why youre gahing. Huge market for sleepers. People who sleep represent a very big part of the music market. It doesnt matter what kind of music someone listens to, they still need sleep. We all do. What if someone had a lot of trouble  falling asleep? Well maybe they just need to listen. I know when im causting away, many times the tune im working on will make me fall asleep. This is interesting.

Edge is like a point. If everything had a point, we'd all be blind
