While browsing the forums, I stumbled upon an old music challenge from September of last year... Wish I'd known about this sooner... So, who's up for a new challenge?
Caustic (whichever version you like, I'm on Caustic 3 RC4) only! No external samples, loops, nothing...
Okay, Im new here, so question: Are expansion packs, uploaded presets, etc...allowed?
¿que onda, pachuco?
Fudge, I forgot about that. I have a lot of expansions myself and that does include samples. Me personally, I have samples that aren't included with caustic or expansions in specific folders, but in the interest of good old fashioned fun, perhaps we should ditch the no samples bit. But no loops!

I would guess that the OP wants to see how users push the synthesis capabilitites of the app verses using it as a sequencer for loops.
So I would agree that loop samples would be excluded if you wanted to here the actual technic.
But yeah, sampling vs. synthesis is the same thing, how you do it is your style.

Im a bit confused..... This was a song contest from a year ago...... Any of the rules etc.... Would have been listed on that thread before....
Occasionally we'll set up a challenge with specific situations or somethg fun to get people to think hard before making a track for such a challenge.....
I bet when Caustic 3 officially hits the markets, something will get setup for a new challenge when we dont have to focus on testing and bug-finding in C3 that many of us have been working hard on recently....
Jblann, yes, there was a contest a year ago, but I was pretty much assuming this was done, and I'm still relatively new to the Caustic community. If the old contest is still relevant, okay. Just trying to jump into the community in a more direct fashion. Wasn't trying to seem like it was my idea, just read some old forum posts from before my time lol

I realize many are still testing the waters with RC4, but it's all in the name of fun and creativity.

I assumed you were talking about a new challenge. I think one is in order with C3 looming in the distance anyway.
I do think, it would be a fun challenge to just use synths, maybe that is what you were getting at, maybe not.
The problem is like I said, not every body out there is good with setting them up and the new ones are even more complex, so coming up maybe two challeneges at the same time. I would like to hear what people do with just the synthesis power fo C3, so I am behind that challenge for sure.
Mike
From what I gathered, RC4 is just about the real deal, aside from any last-minute minor adjustments.... Rej said RC4 doesn't expire....
But if you're just going to use synths, I will soon have a huge batch of presets that will be released, that can easily be loaded up, alot of my synth presets have alot of animation and unique modulation to really inspire and fatten up your tracks for any challenge that comes our way....
Most of my recent tracks use alot of synths, and only PCMSynth for mostly drums lately, just to show off more the power of the new synths...
Rej gifting us with a near-final RC that won't expire surely helps. After playing around with RC2 I decided there was no going back to Caustic 2.1 for me.

And yes, my initial aim was getting creative with synths. I've fallen in love with FMSynth and Modsynth...

The Modular is one heck of an instrument in Caustic.... the possibilities are near endliess.... I will be showcasing the amazing noise that this thing can create in upcoming video series I'm working on over the next several weeks...
I am looking forward to it. :-D

Also, I think it would be foolish to use Caustic for loops... As it's not meant to really handle that, loops tend to skip/glitch/repeat endlessly if they're longer than like 10 seconds.

I would have thought a song challenge would have wanted a theme.
Something you could get a hook on, like a walk through a secret garden, or a wander round area 51... Then the music would reflect your minds eye visit...
Furthermore, when I used to write computer games they'd be challenges where the media is supplied, so everyone is working from the same starting point. Style is completely your own choice. So bearing that in mind you could have a set of x instuments and presets that can be used, and you're not allowed to touch the dials on it. Obviously you'd be able to layer on the effects in the effect rack.
I accept... I'm probably a bit of a hippy.

Defining a theme would seem somewhat limiting, I feel.

Sorry, just did a further edit. Limiting is kind of the point though, so everyone is working on the same brief and coming up with their own twist on it. And the scope of difference even when everyone is based on the same palette of sounds.

At heart, that is the idea. I guess I was considering theme synonymous with genre.
VIOLENT NEUROSIS (YouTube) ...https://www.youtube.com/user/ViolentNeurosis
Well I don't think the challenge has been "officially" declared yet but I think since the release of Caustic 3 is close, the theme should have to do with new beginnings or something, like the hero's epic journey, coming back home to share his spoils, cause in my mind, that is what Rej is doing right now. hehe
Mike
I think if you define the rules clearly enough you'd be able to get a range of styles...
For Example, if I were setting the rules I would say something like:
Baseline Synth only allow cutoff and resonance of the presets can be changed. (3 supplied)
BeatBox you can monkey with the supplied presets as much as you like (within Caustic) (2 supplied) (or any number of beat boxes and x samples supplied)
PCMSynth you can monkey with the supplied presets as much as you like (within Caustic) (5 supplied)
SubSynth (like MC Hammer) you can't touch this. Only use the presets supplied. (3 supplied)
Regarding the new C3 machines probably just take presets too, I certainly have no idea how to work them anyway! (yet!).
No limitations on the FX board or Mixer.
Something like that anyway...

Some interesting ideas, and Ii like that I'm actually getting feedback from you guys.
And Mike, that seems fitting lol
VIOLENT NEUROSIS (YouTube) ...https://www.youtube.com/user/ViolentNeurosis
I'm torn. I don't like how using a set number of presets for each machine severely narrows the creation potential overall, yet I like the idea of using the set number to 'force' creativity within boundaries.
VIOLENT NEUROSIS (YouTube) ...https://www.youtube.com/user/ViolentNeurosis
I like the idea of waiting until C3 is released because we may get a bunch of new shy warriors and we could use it as way for them to introduce themselves and at the same time, give the people who have been around a challange.
Agreed.
