Caustic Song file (optional):
Bojeroo posted this excellent psy trance tune recently http://www.singlecellsoftware.com/node/3468 and for some reason it set a light bulb or two flashing in my mind...
So here's my response..another psy tune. The title is a bad play on words - 'Go and See' = 'Goan Sea'.
11 Racks
2 Modulars
2 Beatboxes
2 FM Synths
3 Basslines
1 Padsynth
1 8 Bit
145 bpm - other than experiments with drum and bass this is the fastest tune I've made, at this tempo there's not a lot of room to be creative with the drums
There's not much song or pattern automation and plenty of noob sauce. The mix needs some polishing and balancing and the drums probably need beefing up a little.
cool track...i really like that sound that comes in at 1:48, its got alot presence...this is another good track made without a pcm synth.
I like this James! Lots of energy. Do you mind if I do a remix?
Hi, James. Sounds interesting experiment. I feel the energy in your music.

This song is really annoying... bits are really good bits and bits that I really don't like!
1:13-1:39 like!
At 3:18-3:48 when it comes back in I think it is brilliant... although I hate the tss tss tss hihat shiz. Actually I think the drums need work generally. They kinda feel a bit cliched, the fill reminded me of Move any mountain by the Shamen!
I think this post is coming across negative... It's not meant to... The good bits are really good!
And surely "G'wan Sea" ?

Maybe I just don't like PsyTrance very much... That could be it actually...!! It's probably awesome... I just paint everything with my "it must sound like pop music" brush!

There seems to be a fair bit of Goa Trance popping up all of a sudden on this site, and it's definitely not a bad thing! Great work James, sounding very nice

That would be great, hopefully you can fix some of the things that I didn't nail, although it would be cool if you took it somewhere different too.
Maybe then I'll have a stab at your remix and we'll have a metamix on our hands

I enjoyed your reply greatly until the twelth word, unfortunately I then felt the repeated use of the word 'bits' showed a lack of imagination that is sadly all too common these days.
It then picks up again and the sentence contruction and phrasing is most pleasing...until we get to 'shiz' at word forty. I'm afraid you lost me again there and I had to read today's copy of The Times for several hours until the memory of your crass Americanism had faded from my mind.
Writing this response has unfortunately brought the full horror back to me and I believe I must now go and lie down for a while and dream of our lost Empire.

I'm sorry my reply caused such pain. I will endeavour to use words like gusto and verve in the future. Justin bieber will not be mentioned. Sugababes might be mentioned but only in reference to their videos. And I whole heartly apologise for use of the word shi*. It will not happen again.

He he, I'm actually a big fan of the first 3 or 4 Sugababes albums
Less so of the Bieber
The tsk tsk hats are pretty representative of the genre and that's what I was aiming for, for good or ill...but I agree, I'm not a huge fan of the perc on Trance tracks. It often sounds as though all the effort goes into the synths, filters etc and as long as there's a solid kick to underpin it, rhythm seems to go out of the window.
I guess that's why I gravitated to techno when I was in my big clubbing phase, there's a lot more emphasis on the perc even though it's still largely four to the floor

Thanks
I struggle with the PCM Synth and still tend to use it as sound module for real instruments - Pianos, Strings etc, and not as a real synth.
It's on my list of things to try harder with this year. If I continue to experiment with glitchy electronica I can see it becoming essential, I guess it's just fear of the unknown.

What are the high hats supposed to sound like if not tss tss tss? I agree though, very representative of the style and I also agree I on not always being a huge fan of the percussion on trance music. Used here though, I think they help keep the track driving. My favorite part is the more melodic synth part that comes in around 2:30.

When I think of trance I think of this sort of thing with has a truly awesome rhythm section... But then... Hybrid are rather good...

I keep thinking about having a go at covering this... Or at least stealing... Err... Borrowing from it! I just think this track is stunning.
And if you've not got this album... Just buy it.

Hybrid are the exception not the norm though - a 'trance' act that uses breaks not four to the floor.
