Adrian King - Sundown

Caustic Song file (optional):

Hello everyone,
I want to share with you a particularly ambitious song that I've been working on the past few days. I was trying to replicate the millennial era of Ibiza trance in this one, but with a touch of acid and chill too (just to mix things up a little). I really enjoyed making it, and I hope that you will equally enjoy listening to it.

I say ambitious because I have indeed used 13 racks, with plenty of fine tuned effects and automation - my CPU meter was teasing the red zone at some points cheeky

Ah Sash and Digweed... So you

Ah Sasha and Digweed... So you took the challenge! Nice bassline coming in at 1:00;

- 1:30 great changes, I can feel it.

- 2:00 lead seems like it needs a tad of reverb.

Overall interesting mix of some old school techniques with your present day style, you might not even know how you actually did mix your style into this.

3:40 is epitome string/pad slight variations.

Interesting end man.

I like it, if you want my opinion, one of the great feats this era of progressive trance offered was the slight off beat rhythms with some vary light swing syncopating on the bassline.

Right on man!

amazing!  i love the uplifting chord changes,  reminds me a little of that song "children" though, and depending on your perspective may or may not sound slightly cliche ( i should talk..lol)...excellent sound design however and automation..and it has a nice clean crisp mix...overall a brilliant trance track..i could listen to any of your tracks over and over, they so well done.

Thank you all for your

Thank you all for your feedback

@Mike  also the use of acoustic instruments like guitars and mandolins in the mix - "Solarstone - seven cities" is a personal favorite and example of this.

I did have Children in mind when I mixed the delayed piano sounds. I think that's the sub genre called Dream trance. I kinda like it. It contributes to the idea of having a fusion of genres in the track. I was intending Ibiza, Euphoric, Dream, Acid and Chill. I was unaware of the controversy of Robert Myles Children" - I suppose its a very soft and lazy trance.

I definitely agree with

I definitely agree with everyone that this mix is very impressive. I struggle sometimes to get three drum sounds and two synths mixed in but you have tons of stuff going on with everything coming through super clear.

I'd agree, I think it's your most ambitious track to date and you've pulled it off superbly. It sounds really glossy, with an extremely detailed mix. It's a 4 minute epic which, when you think about it, is quite an achievement laugh

From a purely subjective perspective you could repeat the sections at 3:05 and 4:03 for 5 minutes, miss out all the orchestrated bits, and I'd be as happy as a pig in shit, but that's just me cheeky

Actually what I really meant,

Actually what I really meant, its great you are looking at that era of progressive trance/house (when it really was). I didn't mean you copied anything. Just that it's great to see you looking back there and some of the sounds you are getting. Show your friends where that classic sound is.

When I get my crap together with programing someday, that is the style you will hear from me.

I remember that catchy "drive"  song you had, that's the sort of trance I associated with you when our paths crossed. Can't wait to hear more from yousmiley

I have every single one of these and listen to them quite a bit. 1996-2002, that was a very kewl time in progressive trance/house. And we will look back at that period like classic rock and Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix etal.

That simple but hypnotizing sound will come back in the next 10 years, I am sure of it. This over synthed, layered to death crap has turned into pop. Compressors must DIE!, They didn't use that crap in excess back then.

Cheers DanSeb - you have the ear too wink

celebzooz - Thanks, I tried to replicate the crunchy snare sound he's fond of using - might have been what sounds a bit like him, but you're completely right. I found delaying a dancy snare infront of a clap by 1/64th of the beat does this.

caustic replay - Ah, any particular songs? Would love to hear!

Mike - compressors are great though cheeky Compressors solve every mixing problem there is!! "Oh there's too much resonance? >Slam a compressor on that channell!!" lol

I just find them easier for ducking instead of using envelopes wink

Okay, so I look for my 2

Okay, so I look for my 2 Sasha & Digweed Northern Exposure CDs last night.  One is missing, and the other I only got 4 songs deep into before household duties called.

I guess what I mean is that this song you wrote seems to have the same overall polish, and melodic varieties that I remember hearing on the two Northern Exposure albums.  Maybe not "your song sounds like this song" kinda thing, but the flow, the quality of work, the transitions.....  When I loaded up your .caustic file, and started listening, I had to check the mixing section & limiter.  The sound output was strong, and clean!  Great job on the mixing.

I can learn a lot from your work here, so thank you.

I'm still listening to this.

I'm still listening to this.

This must have been a ton of work, which means that you must have had to at least have a 'storyboard' in your head, or on paper, on how this thing was going to play out, before you started.

Can you share your process?  yes

Ok first point, this track is insanely cool. It has a great vibe and a fricking sweet progression. 2nd I have (and continue to) studied the caustic file and learned some awesome tricks. Example the automation you put on the pads in the intro like with the delay + volume + lowpass = blew my mind. Any more you could share about what was going through your head would be amazingly helpful. Thank you for all you have taught me thus far and for a great track for the personal playlist.

At the fundemental level everything is frequency, music truly is life :)
