Okay, after listening to it through, yet AGAIN, I feel that I should point out the D16 pattern. I stole the idea from Jason (thanks, dude), but I shouldn't have put it where I did... Move the block if you like.
.... Until people were swearing up and down it was NIN who covered Cash... I went to a NIN concert 5 years ago and when he was performing "Hurt" this drunk Mexican dude kept saying "he's doing Johnny Cash song!"
Just had my first poke at the .caustic, TheZeroProject. Good stuff! I already got a skeleton of what I'm doing sketched out and am excited to get to work for real later today.
Just taking a break... Really enjoying adding to your bassline. It's like putting together a puzzle. I think this is gonna turn out really cool if I may say so myself.
Just about got it done. Still debating if I am gonna smooth out that sort of surprise ending you have there or just leave it for the next guy. Gonna sleep on it before I pass it on but I'm ninety percent there.
The iterations get linked in the initial post, as they develop, and then once the final version is mastered, I'll post it to the Community Jam group on SoundCloud, tag everyone involved, and add the SoundCloud link to the top of the initial post.
OK, I got it to where I hate none of it! The next natural thing to add was beatbox/drums so I did. I kept them pretty sparse/simple so that someone might could add more percussion if they so desired. I also thought that the rigid sort of rock beat complimented the bassline. .
The drums caught me off guard, wasn't expecting claps, but I gotta say you really helped paint a picture with that foundation, sir! Mindfool, keep that potato white-hot!
Those claps are a sample from my Boss DR-110. It is like the poor man's 606. You can't edit the sounds but, on the plus side, it has a handclap sound--which, if I'm completely honest w/ myself, is the only reason I bought it.
The DR 110 was my first drum machine, I bought it mainly to get some beats to play along with at home. Boy was that sound crappie, I had to layer the snare with rim and clap to get some punch out of it :) But it was a fun machine to work with.
I was very excited to finally get the thing sampled and into Caustic and I try to use the kick/snare like every single song and I have found they are just not that great for anything. It is cool to have an old analog machine though so I guess it is not a total wash. My main squeeze is my Korg Volca Beats now for analog drums or, you know, just one of the bojillions of 808/909 samples to be had from almost any drum machine, sampler, synth or clock radio on earth.
I bet Caustic's FM synth gives you flashbacks then---though I would presume that's based on a DX7. The Caustic FM Synth should be more of a nightmare to program to be vintage correct.
Been working on this whenever I've had the chance today. After much deliberation and messing about I've settled on my choice of instrument and some basic ideas. Needs a LOT of fine tuning though so I suspect I'll be utilizing my full three day quota on this. Without me intending it it's coming out quite dark so far.
Basically I'm mostly just trying not to mess up the superb job ZEROProject and LogicalFrank have made on the first couple of slots. I have to say it's been really exciting (if a little daunting) to work on such a quality foundation, totally unlike anything I'd ever come up with on my own.
It was really weird for me to work from one completed part that lasts the duration of the song. Normally, I come up w/ a bassline, a lead and drums then make thirty seconds or a minute worth of music and then begin adding more layers and sort of hacking the song out starting from the first note and ending on the last note like I was writing a book or something. Doing this project makes me want to try some different approaches as I feel like having to come up w/ a whole bassline (or whatever) that needs to be interesting on its own w/o accompaniment will lead to new ideas.
I hope I haven’t messed this up too much. My original plan was to contribute a simple rhythmic pattern with Bassline but had to admit bitter defeat after a couple of hours as absolutely nothing I tried was working. Next I fired up the Padsynth and decided a sparse organ-like sound was the way to go and I just ran with that. I’m not great at mixing so I’ve deliberately kept the volume on my slot low but I think it works (at least it does in my head).
Like I mentioned in my earlier post it was very exciting to work over the fantastic slots TheZEROproject and LogicalFrank created but it was jolly nerve-wracking also. In some respects it would have been much easier to work over something more uninspiring because with this it felt like the best I could hope for was keep the standard as close to awesome as my meagre abilities would allow.
Of course there’s still another 11 slots of potential awesome to go so I’m not too worried ;)
Sound great, man! It fits right in there. It is really cool to see stuff I never would have thought of work every bit as good as what I would have thought of--or better.
For what it's worth, I changed the other machine's volume when I worked on mine. I figured it was fair game since it doesn't really change the timbre of the part and if I kept it as loud as it was and then made my drum part as loud as it needed to be to be heard and then the next guy and the next guy did the same, we'd be out of headroom in the mix really damn quick. It is all going to be changed eventually anyway.
I'm pretty sure I'll just be looking to add a few splashes of texture by the time it's my turn, although I do have a couple of other tactics I'm thinking about

I hope the song starts out New Country or Light Jazz because I "love" that shit.
New Country? Is that like NuMetal? I don't want to hear Fred Durst or Jonathan Davis sing country...

Oh there is lovely rendition of Stand by your man with Lemmy from Motörehead and Wendy O Williams that is just great for your listening pleasure.
Not NU metal but when it got released it started a small shitstorm and members left Motörhead fans hated and I got excited!

Whoa....4+ minutes right off the bat, and a sweet subsynth foundation. Nice!

Wow that bass line is nuts. This is going to be fun.
Did someone lay claim to #14?
Nobody that didn't already have a slot in the jam....you want it, right?

You took the one that silences the other machines when it goes like: I'm gunna kill-, but you didn't silence you machine.

Yea I don't think it matters if i silenced those machines, it was only for 0.5 seconds.

To me, it doesn't matter. I'd rather someone were able to put their complete idea forth as best they could.

So it sounds like I linked to the wrong file, which caused danjdob to add his stuff to a file you don't want to use?
What do you folks want to do? Have Tyrinasoarus clean up the file quick, and then the next person can grab it?

Great job Tyrinasoarus. Love the way you've expanded on Frank's 'I'm gonna kill you' sample and that ending Is pure genius.
