Community Jam Five!! Wahoo!
In Community Jam #4, we talked about how this one would go, and RadioRev had a cool idea: Random machine assignment for each player. So we're going to give it a shot and see what comes out.
<Details on the general idea at the end of this post>
RULES:
- We will be using whichever is the most recent version of Caustic available for both Android & iOS, released or beta. If you can't read the file, you need a newer version. (Actually, looking at the builds currently available, the Android beta is 1 release ahead of the iOS, so there's nothing we can do about compatibility between systems for now).
- Caustic Replay will assign your machine via random number generator, for a truly unplanned experience
. Your machine will be revealed after your name in the list below when your turn comes up. (This should keep the suspense factor up a fuzz
)
- Each person can use 1 FX slot
- Players can only use automation to craft their sound on the machine itself (cutoffs, ASDRs, Res, etc.), otherwise, and on their 1 insert effect, otherwise, no other automation allowed.
- The person mastering the final mix gets to use whatever FX they want to apply to any of the 14 open FX slots, as well as the 2 open slots in the mastering section
- 3 days per person (please try and stick to this)
- Person mastering the final product gets the freedom to adjust anyone's machine automation as they see fit.
Machine numbers are as follows:
- SubSynth
- PCMSynth
- BassLine
- BeatBox
- PadSynth
- 8BitSynth
- Modular
- Organ
- Vocoder
- FMSynth
- KSSynth
Let me know where you want to be in the list, but since we have no idea what machines we're going to use this time, list position may not matter as much.
1. StrangeGravity [10: FMSynth] - CCJ5CW1 - 5/6/14
2. Bad Ickaruzz [1: SubSynth] - CCJ5CW2 - 5/13/14
3. MadFishGuy [7: Modular] - CCJ5CW3 - 5/17/14
4. Lost In Anomie (dfrenette) [7: Modular] - CCJCW4 - 5/19/14
5. Pan65 [9: Organ] - CCJ5CW5 - 5/31/14
6. Hatarakimasu [3: Bassline] - CCJ6CW6 - 6/1/14
7. jeraste [6: 8BitSynth] - CCJ6W7 - 6/16/2014
8. LogicalFrank [9: Vocoder] CCJ5CW8 - 6/25/14
9. mindfool [4: Beatbox] - CCJ5CW9 - 6/27/14
10. TheZEROProject - [7: Modular] - CCJ5CW10 - 7/9/2014
11. Caustic Replay - [10: FM Synth] - CCJ5CW11 - 8/13/2014
12. Lost in Anomie - [2: PCMSynth] - CCJ5CW12 - 8/20/2014
13. jblann - [9: Vocoder] - CCJ5CW13 - 8/29/2014
14. Skynexia - [9: Vocoder] - CCJ5CW14 - 8/30/2014
15. macnasty99 - CCJ5CW15 - 9/2/2014
The general idea of what we're trying to do here (copied from the 1st Community Jam post):
Get 14+1 Caustic Warriors lined up to put a track together. The way it works is the first person adds a machine to Caustic, creates patterns, and adds it to the sequencer. Then the second person does the same thing, and so on down the line. When all 14 machine slots have been filled, then the +1 (15th) person mixes and masters it all. Caustic Replay then uploads it to SoundCloud under the username "Caustic Collaboration", and tags everyone's name to the track, and finally updates this initial post with a link to the final product on SoundCloud.
I am in. Any spot is fine.

I would like a position and if possible make it back to sixth.

Slot 9 if possible please.
mindfool
how did you know that 7 is my number? well played c.r., well played indeed.
Because you didn't seem to mind where you wanted to go, so 7 seemed like the happy spot between 1 & 14. I didn't use 1 & 15 because folks who mix & master usually don't throw their name in the hat so quickly, at least that's how it seems to me.

works for me! I am very curious to see how this goes, randomly assigned machines is quite a curveball. =)
I'm in... Whatever slot...
What's my machine CR?
he might be waiting for the previous jam to be posted, I remember him saying something about waiting. might be a good idea to let the slots fill up a bit more as well.
Hold on a sec, I'll 'roll the dice' and post it in the initial post...

ROLL FOR INITIATIVE! =)
I wanted to wait until the previous jam was finished, but from SG's point of view, there's no reason he can't start now.
We'll try it this way and see how it goes.
I just don't want to lose focus on finishing the Jam #4, and then having a chance for us to discuss it if we want while it's still fresh in the brain.

My least used module..... Challenge get accepted
I will take slot 8 if it's still available. Otherwise, whichever slot is closest to slot 8.
My band | My other projects | Your mom
Id like to partake.

Sounds interesting with random machines, I'm in. I'll take spot 5 if it still open, otherwise any spot will do :).
Ill take 15 I guess ill see what I can do with it
Can my name be changed to Lost In Anomie? Thats what I go under in SoundCloud.

I don't care what slot I'm in... I'm more curious about what machine I'll get. There's a couple I rarely use, so this may blindside me a bit lol

I know what you mean. I feel like a stranger to the Organ and the PadSynth myself.

Here you go. I'm pissed off this week, so sorry about all the noise.
Caustic Song file (optional):
I think it sounds pretty cool! (sorry that your pissed off though).

wow. nice work with that FM synth, sounds like you channeled your frustrations nicely. I am even more excited to be in on this project now, kudos! Hope things look up for you now that you got that out =)
What machine do I get? Also can I be linked to the beta. I cant seem to find it in the forums and 3.0 wont let me play the file. using Windows 8. If Betas only for android I can switch to the Nexus 7 but still not sure where to find the download.
DF
I'm not announcing machine assignments for players until their turn comes up, then I pull the random number generator lever each time and update the initial post. The intent of this is to keep an element of suspense in play. :-)
Here is the link to the latest beta (RC2, for iOS & Android). I know that RC3 is out for Android, but if we get any iOS users then they won't be able to read the files.

Im still having trouble. I got 3.1 Rc2 onto my laptop but the song doesnt show now like it did with the 3.01 version. There is a second windows download listed standalone that I tried as well but it gives a message of no file found when I try to download it. Should I just grab rc3 and sideload it to my nexus?
DF
is this about to turn into deathcore lol
not if we end up with 2 kss, 1 fm, 1 subsynth, 6 organs, and 4 padsynths.
More like sludge core.
I tried the Windows stand alone version download and it worked fine. Give that another shot using this link: >>>click this<<<

Holy balls. This is more my speed.

I tried that link and the music file is still not showing up. Would being on Win8 have anything to do with it?
DF
To my knowledge, when using the Windows version, your songs and whatnot are in your Documents library/folder.
VIOLENT NEUROSIS (YouTube) ...https://www.youtube.com/user/ViolentNeurosis
Also, on Windows 7 (not sure about 8), when you download the file, Windows by default saves it to the 'Downloads' folder. See if Windows is putting your file in a downloads folder, and if it is, then move it to the /caustic/songs folder. You can get to that easily by going to the Windows 'Start' button, then 'All Programs', then to 'Caustic for Windows', and then pick the 'Samples, Songs and Presets', and a Windows Explorer window will open where you can get at your caustic folders.

Ok got it working now. Can we up the BPM to 250? Or Im guessing theres "rulez" against that./s Serious question though. Am I allowed to put in samples? Depending on the machine I'm given of course?
DF
Never had a question about the tempo before, so I'm not sure what the correct response should be, however, SG already did his part, and pretty much established the approximate length of time the track will be. Setting the tempo to 250 would probably kill the sound & feel he was looking for when he did his part, so for this track, I'm inclined to say the tempo needs to stay at what it is. Maybe other members can chime in on this with their opinions.
Yes, depending on machine assigned, you can put in samples. Prefer that the samples don't require any permission to be used commercially (if we ever throw together an album from this thing, we're going to want to have everything be legit).

I think that the tempo/swing settings for the song are the first persons job, and should stay where they are, personally. I definitely think changing the tempo would be the same as messing with his preset or automation, just seems wrong somehow.
please leave the bpm where it is
Agreed. You could completely wreck previous parts by changing the tempo even slightly. Should be left well alone.
mindfool
Agreed. The only spot I feel should be able to change tempo is slot 1 and slot 15

I dont think slot 15 should change the tempo
I couldn't agree more. changing the tempo even a little changes so much, automations play out differently, pauses and held notes take on new meanings, can change the whole mood and feel, and potentially ruin the sound. (as an aside, it can be hilarious to take a WIP and mess with the bpm for a giggle or two, but any other time, that is one setting that stays where its put once its put there)
That makes sense :)

I not change tempo that just screws up all automation and changes what everyone put in
Tempo change stays with slot 1
Speaking of tempo... Have a listen to our previous jams with the tempo halved.
