Lobotomy (Westbam Cheesy Quaver Style)

Caustic Song file (optional):

There's a fantastic techno track called Lobotomie by the French producer Emmanuel Top. A biting, snarling acid epic https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejGpjZQdEws.

This...this...is not that track. This is a track styled more after the basic stomping stuff that German DJ's like Westbam and Marusha were famous for. Unbelievably famous and popular surprise

It's not even a style I like but the Modular patch I built the track around took me in that direction. That sound was known as the 'hoover' in the UK.

It's short for a good reason wink

Why is it virtually every

Why is it virtually every track you publish I want to bugger with it? Its like you create a really nice looking car but put square wheels on it or something! I dunno...

Anyway, this means I no longer work on my own extensive collection of embryonic tunes and I invest an uncharacteristicly large amount of time turning your tunes into something that could have a dance routine performed by a steps tribute band.

The upsets me James... It really does...

I was getting a little

I was getting a little frustrated that I was struggling to finish anything, let alone something good. In the end I chose the path of least resistance and finished a track that I knew didn't need much of a structure, or much in the way of sophistication. ...in a style I don't like...simply to achieve the minor victory of completing a thing at all.

Tinker away all you want smiley It's not as if I set out to create a track with enough good bits and the necessary number of flaws to pique your interest cheeky

Anyway, we should get back to that other thing, you know the one that might be pretty good laugh

We could become a duo, at least then you don't feel obliged to try and fix it up after, you could fix it up during instead ;)

Right... Basically just threw

Right... Basically just threw away the drum beat and slapped a new one on... Ya know... Because the whole essence of it wasn't about the drum beat or anything was it...

My phone is refusing to upload the caustic file for some reason

Gah...

It goes boom tssh boom boom tsshh now!

I like it - but you're right

I like it - but you're right it does take the track completely away from the style I deliberately chose wink

But...I don't like Westbam - some of my more disappointing nights out in the 90's were where he was the headline DJ. That basic stomping style is just a gateway drug to Happy Hardcore, imo laugh

Actually listening back to it

Actually listening back to it (my drum version) parts of it are very dubsteppy. Might have to play with it again and see if I can dubstep it up. I've tried loads of times to do dubstep and it always sounds just shite!

reeeemix

so i listened to your track, then rob's, then both again, then downloaded the caustic file to see what was making all those awesome sounds, heard that sick modular a bunch of times, and then pumped out a remix. sounds mostly the same really, just slowed down to 110bpm. i created a mostly new sequence, gave it a new drum track, and popped in my new favorite synth on there.

Thats awesome!

Thats awesome!

Now I want to remix the remix! But I'm at work so can't do anything right now! But the orchestration is really good on that. I'm itching to add some pads to it though to make parts of it drifty!

I've downloaded your remix! Hopefully have a play later!

Excellent stuff - sounds more

Excellent stuff - sounds more like something off the first Daft Punk album now smiley

It's also amazing how much better you've made it hang together by shuffling the bass and lead patterns around blush

I was trying to guess when I

I was trying to guess when I saw your post whether you'd remixed my original, gajoga's truly excellent remix or Rob's mighty fine breakbeat one (until I remembered that Rob hadn't posted the Caustic file).

...and it sounds a lot more like gajoga's than mine laugh The new automation is brutal and gives it a stuttering, lurching feel - good work there.

I think it works better at this tempo than my original. I'm kinda pleased that you and gajoga kept the Beatbox>Modular>Machine Input>LFO>Pan Module in your versions too.

Ya i lowered mine to 105bpm.

Ya i lowered mine to 105bpm. That 145bpm is alot for me, my tracks are usually between 60-90bpm. I changed up the drums and added another bass in there copying the first modular. Shortened some parts and switched some around. Thanks for letting us play with this. =]

I spent a lot of my weekends

I spent a lot of my weekends between about 1993 and 2003 going to techno/trance clubs and raves and dancing all night - I tend to start from 120bpm, 145bpm is towards my upper range.

Above 145bpm all you can do is bounce, which may be fun but isn't funky laugh

Thanks - I think gajoga's mix

Thanks - I think gajoga's mix nails it for me. I love his work and he always seems to make something special when he remixes my tracks.

I'm flattered but confused -

I'm flattered but confused - this was the most intentionally basic / dumb track I've made for a while. Maybe I should stop over thinking things and just go for simple brutality :D

The thing with a simple track

The thing with a simple track is you can do something with it.

Bit like a house that's painted magnolia, the rooms are all in place but you can give it colour, build an extension, get an IKEA kitchen... And so on.

If the house is already finished you have to start knocking down walls and making sure its still structurally sound... Much harder to do. And you make a hell of a mess in the process too.

And then there's the carpeting...
