I have a feeling i'm missing an easier solution to this...
when i'm walking around/doing stuff i'll often want to listen to a caustic track for review purposes...problem is...i don't know of a way to turn off the touch screen without stopping caustic from playing.....this can lead to random button presses and subsequent chaos...
at the moment i use ArgusTouchBlocker and dim the screen down to save battery....it's not perfect tho...
well...that's my tip...but hope there's a better one....if not....i'll post a feature request to allow caustic to keep playing when the screen is turned off...realplayer allows me to listen to songs when the screen is turned off....so something similar to that...
samsung galaxy tab 10.1....android 4.04....
Yeah, I would like this to. Disabling the screen while in my pocket to save battery or just to listen to.
Export your tracks? Seriously Caustic would be the most CPU intensive music player ever.
well but it's for review purposes.....ie listen to track while on the move/doing stuff....notice a change you could make/effect you could insert....then activate the screen and implement it...
...maybe i spend more time than others doing that...not sure...
...having to export after each change would be a hassle....
...i can survive with ArgusTouchBlocker....it's cool...

Seems it could be really necessary feature for adding to options menu. But maybe much more interesting is switching off your device display.
I go to
help -> about caustic
and leave it there. It's hard to escape from randomly and if it does it doesn't do much damage. It does eat up battery though.

--- and the Post-Of-The-Day award goes to......
...thx edgey...that's a useful tip...
...not sure why that's post of the day....more of a misunderstanding.....perhaps my fault for not being clear...
...all i can say is it's useful to disable the touch screen in day to day use of caustic when on the move.....just trying to be helpful...

Nah, I know what you mean and why you'd use it. Export is slow and sometimes you just want to listen to your tracks. Hmm, maybe this could give birth to the simplest CausticCore app ever. An app that loads a file and plays it. With the option to lock/turn off the screen. Maybe playlist support ...
Any takers?
Funny as I was thinking some sort of in-caustic music player would be useful only this morning when I was walking the dog and trying to listen to my latest piece of nonsense!

ah....i'm terrible at explaining...
...i don't get much time to use caustic....usually when on the bus/train....or walking from A to B ( a lot )....sometimes in the car waiting in heavy traffic...
...often i'll hit a rough spot when making a song....when this happens i just listen to it over and over again until i come up with an idea on how to get around it...when the idea strikes...its good to be able to quickly test it out...otherwise i'll forget....or the moment will pass...or i'll have trouble locating where in the song it was.....
...when i'm walking along listening to the track....i might want to put my tablet in my bag (if it was a phone i'd want to put it in my pocket)....but i still want to be able to pull it out quickly and edit the track at times...
...so i need to lock the screen when listening to the caustic track...otherwise random buttons get pressed and create a real mess...
...if you could turn the screen off and have caustic keep playing it would have the added bonus of saving battery power...

The main issue with this (last I checked) was because of a terrible decision from someone on the Android team, having your app play music in the background (screen off and locked) means you have to monitor for incoming calls yourself and shut up if that happens. That means asking for the dreaded "Read phone state" permission which most people interpret as "OMG they're monitoring my calls!!!1, 1-star"
Now I'll admit I've never actually done any tests to see if this got rectified (I can't imagine ANY situation where you'd want your mp3 player for example to keep playing when you get a call) or if it's even true, it's just what I read from many sources.
Maybe I need to do some tests myself. If it can be done without requiring new permissions or hacks, I'll add support for it (like I do on iOS)
I totally get the need for this I often review my tracks whilst walking from a to b and end up just carrying the phone in my hand with the screen on.
I guess a simple option would be a button (somewhere) that just blacks out the screen (not off) with a swipe to unlock gizmo on it. Then we can hit that, pop the phone in our pocket and away we go!

..i like rob's idea as a compromise...
...if rob's idea wasn't feasible for some reason...and there were still permission issues....i guess a third party app (with unpopular permissions) remains the solution..ArgusTouchBlocker is ok....just that the menu row at the bottom of the screen remains functional which leads to button triggering and song stopping sometimes....
must be a hassle dealing with phone permission issues as a dev...

Well I just did a very quick, unscientific test using my wife's phone to call mine (mine is HTC One running 4.4) and with Caustic running in background the phone call still stopped playback as you'd expect. Maybe the issue has been fixed since!
I'll add the option for the next version and we can test some more during the next beta. I'm counting on you to remind me to give this a good testing if (when) I forget.
cool....deal...thx man....

G-stomper beat studio for example has this funktion and i agree its very usefull for listening to your work while on the go. Mayby you can talk to the dev about the permission trouble
I have a simple low-tech solution that requires no additional programming - put the tablet in a cover that you can close over the screen. Mine cost about four dollars at Big Lots.
Rej, if you throw it out there, I'll test it on my gear here...
hey steph.....actually....that probably is a reasonable option....i do have a cover somewhere....i never use it usually...the extra bulk irritates me a little....but accidentally pressing buttons irritates me more....so thx...
...maybe that's not an option for people with pressure sensitive touch screens...my HTC phone is pressure sensitive...but i checked and my tablet is heat sensitive....i was getting a bit confused about which one was which...and therefore what my options were...
...i guess heat sensitive phones still get their buttons pressed in peoples pants pockets?...
..i'd still prefer it if caustic works with the screen off...but yeah...priorities for the dev....
thx for the tip...

Yes sir rej!! This helps me out alot!!! I have just recently realized i had a clitch in my device ((( Samsung's Galaxy player ))) (( a Samsung's version of a touch ipod ))) this device has a battery life of one year. ((( i know i'm screw'd i found out about it after I got it. )) the device has no developer options at all and the wifi has not work in months for google play store. But i was able two do a work around reach around two get a cpusage. And the problem of the above. ((( the screen always on. Win i spend so much time in heavy listening mode. )))
Ps i got apk files of, "cool tool" and "android tuner" by c3. 0r better known as system turner. My lady friend got a tablet. And i was unsure of her processing speed two do caustic on. So i do most of the downloads from her tablet and transfer two a mac for usb tethering transfer. Using "android transfer" for the tablet and an exchange with a micro sd card reader. Please advice the exchange of mirco sd card.
My cover is a generic 7" tablet cover, basically two pieces of thin cardboard covered in nylon fabric, with elastic bands at the corners of one piece to hold the tablet in place.
I made a photo album on teh PhizBuk when I cobbled together a stand to prop it up for listening to music at work. The first photo shows the cover pretty clearly.
GS BeatStudio runs on a different dev engine, and probably has a different way to play your tracks in a simple player mode. The sound structure and how the samples are loaded up into "tracks" are very different than it is here, which seems to make it easier for Andreas to set up that option.
I've started exporting my unfinished tracks and adding them to a "works-in-progress" playlist, but before I realized I could do this, I'd put the screen on an empty beatbox to minimize interference from my pocket or backpack, and I'd have multiple saves just in case some rogue notes were added or some settings got screwed up.
While an app that just plays caustic files instantly would be kinda cool, I rarely find myself in a situation in which I absolutely need to hear a work-in-progress right away, but also have to slip my phone in a pocket so I can do other things at the same time.
That said, what do I know? Every piece of tech I thought I'd never need has become something I can't imagine living without, such as, say, a phone without actual buttons. When will Caustic be released for my old Blackberry curve???
hehe....like the budget stand steph....very macgyveresque...

I am one crafty bastard.
about the play-only app suggested by Rej. I think this could be a cool one (with playlist included), and why not help to distribute tracks and albums in a new way: Ordinary users could listen to the play app, containing some additional graphics; and registered users could load the song in Caustic, and then remix, rearrange...Think of it as a dedicated Caustic player
at a potential $.99 for market, he should consider creating it....
...well..i found my tablet cover....all good for now
...
hmmm....i'm not so sure about the play list app...but maybe that's just me......if someone told me ten years ago that people would soon be watching other people play video games online i would have thought they were bonkers....now pewdiepie earns millions a year from it.....soooo....

I think the idea of a browser mode, kinda like what bridge is to photoshop, would be a great idea.
Interested in the initial request here as well.

I'd like to add a "me too" to this request.
Another app that lets you simply lock the screen and keep listening is Music Maker Jam. If this requires asking for more permissions, it's definitely worth it.

I am not really sure this solves my particular use case.
Say I'm playing with the Caustic app on a subway. When I get off the train and walk outside, I want to be able to lock my phone, put it in my pocket and keep on listening until I get to where I need to be and then turn the app off. Maybe even make a quick adjustment to the track before I quit the app.
Having to switch to an external app, listen there and possibly having to switch back to the main app, search for the part I want to change -- that seems like more work than some suggestions above (eg: going to Help -> About Caustic).
Is the problem really just that you'd need to ask for more permissions from the user? I am not an Android developer, is this just the case where you need one thing, but need to ask for multiple permissions that can "scare away" the user?
I feel like this used to be a caustic feature and isnt anymore ive been looking for the button in the advanced section
