Caustic Song file (optional):
Hi guys, long time no see...
I was playing around with Melodyne (Pitch correction software) to learn more about it. I found a way to pitch my voice so it sounded almost female and I just had to use it in a song. Here's what I came up with... The lyrics are a bit cheesy but hey that's me. As usual all music was made in Caustic except for the acoustic guitar, however I did mix the whole thing in Sonar X3. There's no vocals in the caustic file but I figured it might be interesting for you guys anyway so...
I really like this track.... Great work
This is brilliant, nice one Pan.

Been a while to have heard something from you, nice arrangement.... this was not an easy task, I can tell.... You pulled it off nicely.
Thanks bmakk
Thanks mindfool
Thanks Jason, Yep been a while since I uploaded a track. The last six months have been quite hectic especially at work and it have been difficult to find both time and inspiration for creative work. But I have a couple of projects waiting to be completed, we'll see if I can finish them soon.
the Baritone vocals do give it slightly gothic edge that makes for an unusual contrast with the music and the sentiment.
Excellent work. The bass playing stands out as being particularly natural in feel and sound.

You almost sound like.Bowie :-)
Awesome track. You have a Byrne/Gainsbourg sound going on that is fun to listen to. Keep with it!

Thanks James. Thats a very nice constructive comment there. I was aiming for a more "happy" tone in the vocals but I wasn't in the mood during the recording session. I think I had about 40 degrees Celsius indoors and had to keep windows closed to minimise background noise, I could barely breathe. Maybe I'll redo the recording later on but right now I'm sick and tired of this song
Bowie? Now thats a compliment, thanks. I wouldn't dare to sing a bowie song though, thats too technically advanced for me
Thanks Matt
So was this track made with Melodyne? If so it sounds very natural.
I have a copy of autotune that I keep meaning to experiment with. I understood that it sounds rather artificial.
Yes it was during a Melodyne practice session I came up with the idea for this track. Even Melodyne tend to sound rather artificial if you tune a note too far from the original note and that's why the back vocals are pushed so far back in my mix (they are pitched a whole octave above the original pitch). But it sounds a lot better than any results I ever had with Autotune.
Melodyne is much more than just a pitch correction tool, you can fix timing issues, vibratos, pitch drift, attack, formants and so on. You can let Melodyne work it's magic in full auto mode, semi auto or manually. The last option gives you full control over every single note played or sung, which means you can correct the pitch of key notes while keeping other notes more or less flat and that will help your vocal tracks to sound more natural (IMO).
The software is a bit pricey but you can test it for free and you can watch others use it on Youtube to get a hint what it's all about. I wouldn't say it's worth every penny but once you start using it you will wonder how you manage without it before. My version shipped with my DAW (Sonar X3) so I didn't have to pay extra for it, you need to buy at least the Studio version though but that's the version with the most bang for the buck.
So good to hear music from you again Pan65! Very inspiring music here. Thanks for sharing the track and your process.
Great track! Love it, a very fun listen...the fade out at the end seems a little weird...maybe its soundcloud...and the vocal is really good but during the chorus it sounds like it could use a little eq or something to my ear.
Thanks Wardini. I see you haven't been resting while I was away, lots of good stuff there. I have a lot of catching up to do both here in the community and on SC, some of my friends are very productive.
Thanks Dan. I suppose you are referring to the back vocals? Yes I was struggling with some weird artifacts that stick out to much, especially the Q in BBQ, I managed to remove some of it but not entirely. Sometimes you need to say enough is enough otherwise you would be fiddling with your tracks forever never releasing anything. I can send you the stems if you like to give it a try, but I think the file will be huge.
The fade was originally a mistake but I kept it as is because it sounded different and unexpected.
