'Extasis' - new downtempo / trip-hop / Dubby track

Caustic Song file (optional):

This has been on the back burner for a few months, something down-tempo. Hip hop beats with a hint of dub. It's also the first time I've resampled - I exported some beats as loops to .wav, and then reversed them in the sample editor to play back in a BB.

I didn't quite get the reverse reverb I was aiming for - I couldn't work out how many bars to loop to capture all the reverb tails (I know Dan and Wardini have played around with this technique a lot more successfully).

The name means 'I Stand' in Latin but also means ecstasy in Spanish, it was the first meaning I was really aiming for. The track aims for a sense of Stillness and / or Serenity.

Only 5 or 6 machines, I tried adding more but ended up taking them out one by one laugh

I really like it, massive departure from your usual heavy electronica sound.

My biggest criticism is that it kinda "goes on a bit" and the progression runs out of steam a little, I think if you have a vocal line hanging it all together it would work really well, even if it's a spoken word type affair (everyone's free to wear sunscreen, no change is sexy, 5ml Barrel, little fluffy clouds etc)

yup, agreed. It's too long to get away with my usual 'I can write nice little riffs but can't actually write a song' approach.

The sound and feel is nice, and yeah maybe if I think of a few shiny things to add I can make it shorter and more 'impactful'.

Although the fact that it's so different is maybe a sign of a little growing confidence smiley

Just had another listen and yup, should have faded it out by 4 minutes - nothing new of any interest happens after that.

I might grab it, lick my fingers and give it a bit of a gentle massage.

I don't want to do my usual radical departure stuff, I just think at around 3 minutes it could use a pad / string coming in giving it a warmer progression and maybe lifting it from the twinkly piano into something a bit more structured.

Feel free - as always you're welcome to tinker smiley

I thought of adding some layers of atmosphere and / or grit, I tried the Vinyl Simulator on the 2nd BB but got frustrated that it was always on unless I automated it, I tend to feel that it should only effect the sound when there's a pattern playing...

I think some filmic samples would work, in an ideal world (you know, that one where your ability meets your ambition) I would have taken it in a DJ Shadow direction and used some dirtied up loops from 'real' records. Movie strings would sound ace for that Portishead / Tricky / I Monster feel

Movie samples / get a poet to

Movie samples / get a poet to spout some of their stuff slightly rhythmically.

I had a go at putting some strings on... It works... But still not found the right sound / progression to make it 'pop'... I may have something over the next couple of days depending on if I work on my own stuff or not!

I'm loathe to use loops from Music Radar, I'd actually prefer to just sample a record..but creating a sample from my vinyl / CD / mp3 collection and then exporting it as .wav to get it into my tablet to load into a BB or PCM is 10 times more work than finding a Music Radar loop at 101 bpm, that's already in .wav format and that I can just DL straight onto my tablet...

I have to say I liked it a lot, and I disagree about it being to long. But, I am very fond of articulate ambient and down tempo. I like songs that you can lose yourself in for a while. Wouldn't change much, if anything. I thought it accomplished itself well.

i love the piano on this

i love the piano on this track, but more importantly, i love the shift in genre on this. i'm so used to hearing to epic, noisy electronic grooves from you, but this is nice and slow, really chill stuff.

i think i might do a remix too, maybe

Thanks, really glad you liked

Thanks, really glad you liked it smiley I love ambient, drone, experimental and down-tempo stuff as well as techno, acid, electronica etc.

I still think the last section was a little unnecessary - the piano motifs aren't pretty enough to support that many repetitions but I'm still proud of it and grateful for the positive comments smiley

Thanks

Thanks smiley

I find Down-tempo, trip-hop, or ambient / drone style music etc harder to make than 4 to the floor techno - it's not part of my core discipline, although it is music I listen to quite a lot.

A remix would be cool smiley I've got a version of 'Living Thing' on the go that I think was one of yours too.

Living thing was 140 bpm. And

I liked this particular track of yours. You've got great beat patterns and nice melodies on your lead. Mind if I remix it? Actually i've been to and fro looking for something to work on and I'm planning to turn this track of yours into glitchhop, something I havent done before...
Comment is edited... There really was a living thing track from gajoga...

There was indeed. the 'Living Thing' sample is from a cool Zvon freepack that's on Google Play - I think most of us have DL'd it and used some of the samples.

I started to remix Gajoga's mighty fine track but haven't got very far yet. I feel I owe him a remix or three as he does such awesome work when he remixes my tracks. I also feel I owe him a good remix so I'm taking it slow.

Really pleased you like 'Extasis', - looking forward to hearing your remix smiley
