Caustic 2.1 beta 2

Here's today's build incorporating some bugfixes from the last beta.

If you're just starting this beta program, have a good read of the Beta 1 thread for instructions, new features, and known issues before jumping in.

If you already had beta 1 installed, just install this one on top, no need to uninstall. However, I would like you to delete the file called "config" in the /caustic/ directory beforehand in order to start from scratch (at least simulating a full install). Your content won't be lost, but your preferences (UI, latency, MIDI) will so you'll have to set them again.

Download Caustic 2.1.0 beta 2 APK

Windows ZIP package, no installer. Unzip somewhere and run the EXE in the "bin" folder. You'll need to have installed the original 2.0.2 windows version first.
Latency should now be down to ~6ms on Windows :D

The following issues should be fixed, please report back if they aren't:

- Dragging multiple notes in pattern editor sets all velocities to same value
- Samples at rate different than 44KHz will play back wrong in WAV preview (file browser only).
- Moving notes to the edges in sequencer doesn't trigger auto-scroll like it does in pattern editor.
- Touch sometimes doesn't respond on edges of the screen in portrait mode
- Multi-select button in sequencer doesn't highlight when toggled
- Latency selection option doesn't change anything. (it has now been set to 1.5ms/5ms/24ms/93ms, defaults to 24)
- Lasso and time select mode get reset after using the horz. scrollbar
- Lasso select doesn't work properly in sequencer pianoroll
- Bassline pattern notes can get stuck when stopped halfway
- Weird textures or crashing when going from file browser view to (Homescreen in Android) and back to Caustic.
- Pianoroll notes in sequencer don't play.

-----------------------------------------

Caustic v2.1.0 Beta 2 - Known issues:

- The app might crash the first time you run it after it's finished extracting demo content. (I wasn't sure, but bojeroo confirmed this is still an issue)
* Piano roll in sequencer can't zoom in past 16th notes or do triplets.
- Pattern errors don't show in pattern editor (and never have)
* There is sometimes a white background with machines thumbnails missing in the machine jump popup.
- Song export is slower than it should be.
- The scroll cursor in the sequencer doesn't line up with the play cursor.
* Random little "white corner triangles" drawing on screen

(*) Indicates this issue should be resolved in the next beta.

Rej, still crashes on demo

Rej, still crashes on demo unpack on mine. Tried reinstalling several times to see if it is repeatable and it is. Occurs whether you first load the app via the installer or later through the homescreen.

Touch now works on the whole screen, yay! :o)

ok , thanks for confirming, I

ok , thanks for confirming, I'll have to dig a bit deeper.

I think I did just find a fix for the "white triangles/sequencer graphics/white machine jump screens" graphics glitch ... so that'll be in beta 3 for more testing.

OK!

Demo/unpack did not crash, and scroll is working in both portrait and landscape. (!!!!)

CONFIRMED ON FIXES:

multiple/drag/velocities is as expected now

Skarabee's 303 bug is gone.

Also 'Popsicle effect' with flanging on jblann1's insomnia pad  (from 2.1 beta 1 thread) is not happening for me.

more later

First try with the window

First try with the window version. Very Low latency + midi keyboard on a Fujitsu laptop: Caustic rocks! And I just use the soundcard of my laptop, wich is not ASIO compatible or "low latency". I bet it could be better with a low latency driver, but it's playable. Now we are ready for a midi record function in real time for windows, or step by step for hi latency machines...

I also tested one midi channel per intrument. Fine. For now, it seems that only note on/off messages are recognized. But if we could have some CC in the future... The channel mixer in Caustic have 8 knobs, like most of the little controlers and midi keyboard. 8 CC's, and the automation will be a breeze.

No demo crash for me, neither on android nor in Windows. No triangles.  Lucky at least? Maybe that's why I love Caustic...

Yeah, I figured out how to

Yeah, I figured out how to set the buffer size on my windows sound library. Silly me, it was quite easy, I had just never noticed the feature.

I'm only handling MIDI note on/off now, but the next version (2.2.) should support more stuff from the modular demo like pitch, volume and MOD wheel. CC will come, I just haven't figured out a good way to set mappings yet. There will be time for that later.

The windows version actually has the (potential) fix for the little triangles, but then again, I don't think I've ever seen it happen on windows before either...

Good News

Playing the demo song...

Very Low latency:  Processor indicator screaming into the red. Forget it.

Low latency: About the same as Beta 1

Medium Latency: A couple of peaks into the yellow. Playback fine.

High latency: Just to be complete about it , all good

So there you go. Problem solved. I've checked out some of my own stuff and that's fine too.

"It's weird that Samsung would make a dual-core 800MHz phone and put Gingerbread on it."

I live in the UK. This doesn't surprise me at all. Thanks for the link. I'll get on to that.

Right! Let's test. Thanks again.

It is nice to have that

It is nice to have that option (latency) to enable users with lower powered equipment to benefit from all the features and big sounds as higher powerex devices, tablets etc...

From what I gather, these

From what I gather, these images look like they are connected to the popin edit dialog when in a pattern sequencer.

When I was in the pattern sequencer I would hit the note edit button, when the poopup tweened in, the artifacts also tweened in with the popup.

Rej you probably gonna plan a

Rej you probably gonna plan a vacation after 2.1 officially hits the GPS...... you derserve it no doubt.

Ive been playing with it today working with the new features......I have to say when Im getting into the muscle memory groove where the parameters are, it is getting very easy to create tracks on it. Im almost complete on a track Ive only put two man hours into, imagine that... well its for something else but I may post it tonight to prove the app works reliably.

Just got Beta 2 going on my

Just got Beta 2 going on my Razr. So far the UI is great and the program itself runs fine.

Issues:
1) The little copy paste icon glitches JBlann mentioned from Beta 1 are seen on the first device only.

2) Either I havent figured it out or it's not a feature is copy/paste notes between measures in machine sequencers. For example, I create a sequence in the first measure, then click copy all, then go to edit and I want to copy then paste into the next measure. It will paste the notes in a lower octave in the first measure but I havent figured a way to paste the notes in any other measures.

3) While still in Caustic- when I press the power button on my phone to shut the screen off, then later press the power button to turn the screen back on nothing happens, just black screen and I have to reboot the phone. If I exit Caustic then do the same thing its fine.

Edit : Sorry to say my Razr does not play well with beta 2. So far I have only used Caustic for about 10 min. and it chewed through 8% of battery and now my phone has force rebooted 3 times. I will have to uninstall for now.

Rej, I would like to get logs for you somehow but if the phone reboots the logs wont show what happened as it only reads recent data correct?

Mekanism, I've changed the way the app reloads after coming back from the screen shutting off, can you please try again on your phone to see if it still crashes/force reboots. If this works, it should actually be faster to come back to Caustic for everyone.

For copy paste, it was one of my worries. basically when you copy, then paste, the note are pasted at the same place (or should be at least), you then have to move the group around by dragging. The auto-scroll should make this a bit easier but without an "edit cursor" like in the sequencer, it's tricky for users to know what to expect.

I think crash logs might be kept around for a while, I'll do some research on that.
