Hello everyone, I'm totally copying SeamlessR!! I'm Divisionary. Welcome to the Bassers Guild. This is the place for all you people that love bass music and would like to either;
a) Learn about new bass techniques and become more acquainted with the science involved in optimizing it's presence.
b) Would like to share efficient/or just cool techniques that you've become familiar with.
c) start following my very slow startup of bass tutorials specifically for Caustic, as well as knowledge on bass design in general. Note: This may take a little time to get going but I assure you that it will pick up momentum once the first tutorial is done. If anyone has a bass that they would like to produce in Caustic and want to know how they can achieve the sound, please send me some ideas. I'm having a bit up trouble figuring out what design I should kick this off with. I'll use your requests as determining factor.
d) If you're forum member: mekanism, raise your hand..............You're awesome if you raised your hand,,,,,,,,
or
e) your just a total nerd that loves our 130 Hz and below, and want it fly, so to speak.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
All tutorial requests can be posted here until it becomes a total gridlock, At that point I will establish a more efficient messaging system, Keep it clean in terms of respecting your fellow bass head, Make it mean and nasty with that bassum, if you fancy,
IMPORTANT: Any and all presets must remain to be posted in the add content area of the forum. If you have a preset that you would like to add with some quick tips, then post your content in said section, Once you've posted your content, you can notify us on this thread and you can leave us whatever tips you would like to add on creating it or something similar. If anyone has a better system for sharing presets with tips, please feel free to post your thoughts here. I have it this way to sustain the order of the forum and maintain relevancy of its sections.
Ok, and Bass!!
Looking forward to seeing your tutorials.

There better be some largemouth bass involved or I'ma be PISSED.

Sweet! I'm glad you got this started. I think what would help first and foremost is to establish the bass types. I know many of you in this forum hate labeling genres and its understandable as it gets a bit ridiculous, but it does help to label things for referencing.
So here are some of the bass sounds that I'm familiar with:
Neuro bass
Reese bass
Sub bass
Acoustic bass
Yoy bass
There are many others so please add to the list.
Prepare to rage, then.
Rinsed out rolling basslines, at no less than 160 bpm, are tasty. As are those of some good ole wompy acid house. But, I've been trying to make some Finger Licking good über-low, yet tight-sounding, electro break bass.
I've gotten into the habit of taking elements of different styles and combining them. It's easier for me to do that than making a track that's highly focused & falls into one category.

Nary did I make this with Caustic. So, I won't upload it to the presets. I made this when I first started dabbling with sound. Still hadn't done anything with it. So, it's downloadable.

~~Largemouth Bass
World Record ~ 22 Lbs. 4 oz. Caught at Montgomery Lake, GA on June 2, 1932 by angler George W. Perry
Scientific name ~ Micropterus Salmoides
Other names ~ Black Bass, Largemouth, Bigmouth, Linesides, Florida Bass, Green Bass, Widemouth bass
Identification ~ The Largemouth Bass has a elongated, robust shape when compared to others in the sunfish family, of which the Largemouth belongs. It has a large mouth and the jaw falls beyond the rear of the eye. The color can vary depending on their location but generally they are light green to light brown in color along the back and sides with dark blotches and a white belly and lower sides. A prominent lateral stripe that runs from the snout through the eye to the base of the tail. The dorsal fin has two distinct portions, the spiny portion with 9 or 10 spines, and the ray portion with 12 or 13 soft rays. The largemouth Bass has a broad tail that is only slightly forked.
There you go! Your one and only time Largemouth bass involvement.
Edit- that reply was meant for dartman and wasn't meant to be a smart ass remark lol. Maybe a little smart ass........But all in good fun..

Good point Mekanism!
Bass styles that are available to my knowledge as an extension to Mekanism's list are:
-FM growl bass (classic) and modern
-Pitch mod bass
-Vocoded bass
-Pure FM bass
-Midrange bass
-top rider bass
-Monster bass
-YaYa, Yum Yum, Yeah Yeah, Oi Oi, and WoW basses
-the recently added RIDDIM bass
-slide bass
-ramp bass
-scream bass
as well as some of my personal creations: Powerline bass and the Ear Bleeder Bass
For more classic style bassing, I can give tips on how to make them sound more preformed using PCM, Modular, Subsynth, and Bassline. As well as how to fit them into your mix for optimal mix balance.

I haven't heard of a rinsed out rolling bass before. I'll have to do some research on it. I'm going down the list of replies consecutively so I'm not sure if you posted a reference to this style. Could you possibly share a reference to a rinsed out rolling bass? If you have already in more current post then disregard my request.
Divisionary sounds at www.SoundCloud.com/divisionaryofficial
That's pretty deep. What did you use to create it? To clarify, what type of synthesis e.g Additive, Subtractive, FM, and so on...

As a question to all of you, are there any strong needs for visual tutorials or video tutorials to be more precise? I'm not experienced with this sort of thing and I know when I watch tutorials it drives me insane when the host is going, "ummmm, sooooo, uuuuhhhggg, so um that's why umm yeah.........." To avoid these annoying vocalizations I would much prefer doing these tutorials as more of written guides or instruction manual type tutorials. Also there's the silent video tutorial, meaning the teacher types notes to read as the tutorial is being shown. Those have always been a pain to follow imo. If there are any pressing needs for video tutorials though, I am willing to do them. I only ask that you bear with me through my growing pains. Thanks.
Divisionary sounds at www.SoundCloud.com/divisionaryofficial
If you want a template then Rej's tutorials are pretty spot on. The only addition I could suggest would be post production highlights and annotations.
You don't have to do everything in one take, although if you do have multiple takes then you have to worry about continuity.
Remember that your takes for audio and video can be recorded separately.
On a separate but related note, Twitch TV is now streaming music

Division, I think a written walkthrough is fine to start out with. If you were to do vids you could think about scripting it. But dont worry too much about being spot on at first, I wont mind the growing pains as long as the information gets across in a coherent manner. Rej's tutorials are great. I also really like the Bassgorilla tuts. For some reason the english accent works well for tutorials lol.
One of the trickiest bass sounds is Neuro bass IMO, as it requires tons of modulation, eq'ing, multiple levels of distortion, compression etc...If you guys can figure out a way to make these kinds of basses in Caustic I will be a happy clam!
Hell yeah, that's my jam right there. Busting out the glow sticks as I'm reading this!
My music at: www.soundcloud.com/patrick-tow
Cool! Thanks for the input guys. Scripting is definitely something that I'll be doing. I'm extremely critical on myself. Scripting would be a sure way to give efficient instructions. Neuro it is. I think it will be challenging and quite the process to achieve a close to the real Neuro bass, in caustic. But it's worth exploration. I'll start developing the first tutorial now.

It's four kick drums and three toms ran with/through a couple of filters on Tabletop.

That's bad ass!! Definitely a unique way to design a bass.

Not sure what you d call it by name but would be cool to replicate a fat Moog style bass sound, not sure if that's one of the styles you be already named, or if that's too broad a thing to throw out there.
Like this-ish: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tmw2tGLUJG4
I just have posted a stereo bass setup for the modular. It creates a stereo chorus effect by two detuned oscillators panned to left and right. A sub bass is mixed with the other signals. Filter / decay can be used to shape the sound.
Hey everyone,
I apologize for the delay on my first tutorial. It's taking a little time to construct a Neuro style bass that is worthy of representation. I think the creation part is done. Now I'm just reviewing and reverse engineering what I came up with. I have a few notes already and I have the intro video done for the most part. I estimate my first tutorial to be up and running by Sunday. If anything changes in regards to the estimated time friend, I will be sure to update you all. Thanks for your patience. I'm looking forward to teaching you all how to create one of the most complicated bass styles by utilizing the modular synth found in Caustic.

That's actually a great one to follow the Nuero bass tutorial that I'll be releasing soon. It's simple so it will give my brain a break. The Nuero tutorial was a very complicated process. Yet, no complaints. It was an awesome learning process. Thanks for the suggestion.
Divisionary sounds at www.SoundCloud.com/divisionaryofficial
We'll be waiting.
Most late 90s drum & bass tracks (Especially from Moving Shadow, Tech Itch Recordings, and Virus) have that really dirty & fluttering bass at song breaks. Thats the rinse. Some tracks (like 3D in Slow Motion (Dom & Roland mix)) carry that rinse. A rolling, or following, bassline would be more like what Kosheen and Breakbeat Era used.

Just be assertive and confident. Not like the alien newscaster from Futurama.
In all honesty; I probably won't watch any. Couldn't even make it through a five minute tutorial. Tis my nature. Subtitles, without the option of on/off, may help. I've been able to figure out +90% of what I do on my own. Dyslexia and severe adhd both hinder and help me.

Okay everyone. The release of the Neuro tutorial for Caustic will be officially posted no later than Tuesday/ Jan, 27, 2015. I will probably post the presets tonight so that everyone has a chance to download them before d day. Thanks for the patients. You guys should get some pretty cool results after this.

Huuhhhh!!!!!
Yes! Thanks for your efforts! Looking forward to try!
Just making some finishing touches and then uploading the Neuro bass tutorial. It's not a video so I wanted to get your advice on what vender I should upload to. I can A) upload the audio to soundcloud, provide the link, and attach the written portion here. Or b) upload it to youtube and share the link the written guide will be downloadable in the description? I'd appreciate any suggestions concerning my inquiry.
Divisionary sounds at www.SoundCloud.com/divisionaryofficial
Either one, whatever works better for you.
The presets are up. Go grab them if you'd like. I'm uploading the tutorial to soundcloud as we speak. I will provide the link shortly. Thanks. Oh haha, preset names are: Neuro Core, SAT and MOD, Mix Bus, and Final mix aux. Neuro bass has a stupid amount of processing.

Hey Div,
Thanks for all the work! You went to town.
I'm curious about the phase width into the pan, I don't hear much of an effect. If you have the time to explain the science it would be awesome, but you probably deserve a break for a minute.
Very endepth i must say.but learning audio is not as good if no visual. Just sayin'!!! Maybe i suck learning anything from the radio. But if i can't download the tutorial as a mp3. Where i have some control over listening in section(s). Stop play rewind. Alot of times on the web it glitches as not helpful two learn this way. Unless u listen two the beginning 5o million times and all of sudden this forum got hell of alot of views real quick!!! Off just getting two step # 2.
If you would like I can email you the written tips guide that I created. Hopefully that will help you a little more. Also, this tutorial is downloadable. If there's something wrong with the download link on soundcloud let me know a.s.a.p. to my knowledge it is fine. As these tutorials progress video will be implemented. I'm just getting a feel for it. Once I've dialed in an efficient work flow that's easy to understand, video will be hand in hand.
Divisionary sounds at www.SoundCloud.com/divisionaryofficial
Thank you! I will analyze my theory a bit more so that I can give you a solid conclusion to my method. For right now I will just give you my current understanding. If the pulse is routed correctly, to which my explanation could very well be lacking proper information, opening the phase width should expand into the stereo field. Therefore, by thinning it, the pulse will become a mono signal that creates a phase in the bass frequency e.g 130 Hz below. I call that hyperactive mono phase the power line effect. Thus is because it makes a similar sound that a snapped power line makes. A good example of what a broken or snapped power line would be in the film Jurassic park when the t-rex first breaks free from his enclosure and eats the blood sucking lawyer. Again I will do a more in depth analasys and get back to you with a more definitive conclusion.
Divisionary sounds at www.SoundCloud.com/divisionaryofficial
Thanks Div. Pretty complex routing you have going on there. It would help if you could upload a .caustic file showing how it is used. Maybe add some automation as well. Thanks man!
Ok, yes, I did hear that. Very subtle, yes?
Thanks for reply.
It is subtle now with the one machine. Once we apply the mix busses as well as effects chains it has a larger effect. I'm posting a nasty Reece specifically for you in the same area of the presets forum. It's called the powerline reece. A lot less subtle. Adjust the p. width knob and it opens and shuts. Meaning full stereo to mono plus additional timbre morphs. Give me a sec and I'll get that uploaded.
Divisionary sounds at www.SoundCloud.com/divisionaryofficial
To anyone interested, I added my powerline Reece to the presets page, as an expansion to the Neuro tutorial. It has a more defined sound when automating the p.width.
Divisionary sounds at www.SoundCloud.com/divisionaryofficial
Complex is all the Neuro knows. I'll work on a project file for you really quick and post it here when I;m finished. Stay tuned.
Divisionary sounds at www.SoundCloud.com/divisionaryofficial
Here's a small Neuro demo. If you're not an advanced user with Caustic 3.1 than I suggest downloading this demo for the preset. As far as reverse engineering it, I must warn you that it's touchy and pretty easy to ruin. When I start out on something I usually destroy it right away and through the process of elimination, I'll figure out all of the things I'm not to do. That's just what I do though. To each their own. I will be putting out tutorials on this Neuro style so if you're incapable hopefully I can help you understand. For advanced users, have a blast. I made small adjustments to the Neuro core preset. I think it's better now. Test it out, it sounds pretty crazy if you ask mre.
Caustic Song file (optional):
Divisionary sounds at www.SoundCloud.com/divisionaryofficial
I'm gathering it's appliable. Two make a closness of popping sounds of low end as deep as kick bass drum sound??? Or make a medium sound; like a tom or snare poppin' sound???? If i gather all the many types of basses u r considering two show on this guild. Now...... if all of the above i throw up in air is a yes. Then could the modular create from within inside all this i'm asking is not a machine input, nooooooo!!!!! No no no.
but can the modular produce a cymbal or hi hat sound with the white noise???
I had attempted this idea but i fail two get anything good. As with the resonance pinging a ringing sound i guess if u can give it a pitch. But..... i ask cause i failed two create the bass drum as controlled sound. But if u can show the caustic file of the reese powerline....... i think this may help me.
I pretty much made it and saved the preset. No project file there really. What are you trying to achieve exactly? Maybe I can give you some helpful tips if I contain the knowledge.
Divisionary sounds at www.SoundCloud.com/divisionaryofficial
Sounds pretty crazy. I'm working on a patch as well. I'm trying to copy what Dan Larrson did in the tutorial he did for Bassgorilla in Ableton. It will be a while though as I have a lot of stuff going on right now. Thanks for the hard work div, its much appreciated.
Sounds good. That's actually what I watched to find out more about the Neuro style. That and the Skope interview which is awesome because you get a free sample pack with it. Some pretty useful ones at that. Do you use Ableton? It's so different from FL that I never gave it much attention. I hear Ableton users credit its midi functionality a lot. Is it that much better, given that you've used FL? Or is it as I have come to believe, just up to your comfort level? I know your busy so response isn't expected anytime soon or even at all. Take care.
Divisionary sounds at www.SoundCloud.com/divisionaryofficial
Yeah Skope is a sick artist, he is probably my favorite of the neuro hop artists. That rollerskates track he made was sooooo good. Anyway, I havent used FL, but have seen many videos on it. I think FL has some advantages over Ableton as far as floating windows and that Harmor machine is just insane! I have been an Ableton user for about 3 years now and know it fairly well at this point. I would say if you are already invested into and like using FL there isnt really a reason to switch, FL is a very capable platform. The main issue I have with Ableton is the windows version isnt as stable as the Apple version and its super annoying. Live 8 was very stable on the pc but Live 9 is super buggy. It crashes almost every time I use it now. I have been meaning to get a hold of tech support and see what's going on, maybe they will fix it soon.
The reason I got into Ableton is I was listening to an interview with Pretty Lights and he talked about it, and I was curious so I looked into what it was and downloaded a cracked version of 8. It got me back into writing tunes again after a 5 year hiatus. I was using Reason before that which is a good program but it always seemed too cluttered for my liking. Just about every big EDM artist I know uses Ableton though, including your boy Skrillex. Its hard to beat the fully customizable rack system and the sampler is awesome as well. Go look up Ableton 128's (piononeered by Ill Gates) on youtube and that will blow your mind with what that sampler can do regarding sample organization. Ableton is really easy to learn at first, but the onion layers are very deep and the onion is very big with that program.
